I agree with you, but I'd say the nuanced discussions in the MISC died off about 10 or 15 years after nuanced discussion had already died in the mainstream.
Most of the people lashing out are sick of being told they're "privileged," being told to harbor guilt over the actions of people from centuries ago they have no relation to other than sharing the same skin color, being told they're "Hunting down minorities!" when crime statistics blatantly show most races just kind of kill themselves, etc.
