Picture this: our universe is not the spry 13.7 billion-year-old entity that we once believed it to be. Instead, it could be a grand 26.7 billion years old.
This finding, according to a new study by Rajendra Gupta, adjunct professor of physics at the University of Ottawa, fundamentally changes our understanding of the universe and may solve the puzzle of the “impossible early galaxy problem.”
For years, we’ve been estimating the age of the universe using two primary methods. First, by calculating the time that has passed since the Big Bang, the colossal explosion believed to have birthed our universe. And second, by studying the oldest stars, based on the redshift of light coming from far-off galaxies.
The redshift phenomenon happens when light from an object moving away from us stretches towards the red end of the light spectrum. By measuring this redshift, we’ve been able to calculate the age of the universe.
In 2021, using a model called the Lambda-CDM concordance, scientists estimated the universe to be about 13.797 billion years old.
Stars can’t be older than the universe
But there’s a problem. Some stars, like the Methuselah, appear to be older than the universe itself. And that’s not all. The James Webb Space Telescope has discovered early galaxies that seem to be far too advanced for their age.
These galaxies were around just 300 million years after the Big Bang but had the mass and maturity typically seen in galaxies billions of years old. What’s more, they’re much smaller than we’d expect, adding another piece to the puzzle.
This is where Fritz Zwicky’s tired light theory comes into play. According to this theory, the redshift we see might not be due to galaxies moving away from us. Instead, it might be because light loses energy as it travels across the universe.
Reinterpreting redshift to account for our universe’s age
For a long time, this theory conflicted with what we saw in the universe. But according to Gupta, if we let this theory coexist with an expanding universe, we can reinterpret the redshift as a combination of both these phenomena.
But Gupta didn’t stop there. He also introduced a new idea based on physicist Paul Dirac’s hypothesis about “coupling constants”.
These are fundamental physical rules that control how particles interact. According to Dirac, these constants might have changed over time.
If we let these constants evolve, then the time for early galaxies to form extends from a few hundred million years to several billion years. That could explain why the galaxies we see are so advanced for their age.
Finally, Gupta challenges the traditional interpretation of the “cosmological constant.” This represents dark energy pushing the universe to expand faster.
Instead, he proposes a new constant that accounts for the evolving coupling constants. This change could help us understand why the early galaxies were smaller than expected. It also offers a more accurate picture of the universe.
In the words of Gupta, “Our newly-devised model stretches the galaxy formation time by several billion years, making the universe 26.7 billion years old, and not 13.7 as previously estimated.”

Scientists may be on brink of discovering fifth force of nature

The tantalising theory that a fifth force of nature could exist has been given a boost thanks to unexpected wobbling by a subatomic particle, physicists have revealed.
According to current understanding, there are four fundamental forces in nature, three of which – the electromagnetic force and the strong and weak nuclear forces – are explained by the standard model of particle physics.
However, the model does not explain the other known fundamental force, gravity, or dark matter – a strange and mysterious substance thought to make up about 27% of the universe.
Now researchers have said there could be another, fifth, fundamental force of nature.
Dr Mitesh Patel, from Imperial College London, said: “We’re talking about a fifth force because we can’t necessarily explain the behaviour [in these experiments] with the four we know about.”
The data comes from experiments at the Fermilab US particle accelerator facility, which explored how subatomic particles called muons – similar to electrons but about 200 times heavier – move in a magnetic field.
Patel says the muons behave a bit like a child’s spinning top, in rotating around the axis of the magnetic field. However, as the muons move, they wobble. The frequency of that wobble can be predicted by the standard model.
But the experimental results from FermiLab do not appear to match those predictions.
Prof Jon Butterworth of University College London, who works on the Atlas experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at Cern, said: “The wobbles are due to the way the muon interacts with a magnetic field. They can be calculated very precisely in the standard model but that calculation involves quantum loops, with known particles appearing in those loops.
“If the measurements don’t line up with the prediction, that could be a sign that there is some unknown particle appearing in the loops – which could, for example, be the carrier of a fifth force.”
The findings follow previous work from FermiLab that showed similar results.
But Patel said there was a “fly in the ointment”, noting that between the first results and the new data, uncertainty has increased around the theoretical prediction of the frequency.
That, he said, could shift the situation. “Maybe what they are seeing is standard scientific thinking – the so-called standard model,” Patel said.
There are other issues. Butterworth said: “If the discrepancy is confirmed, we will be sure there is something new and exciting but we won’t be sure exactly what it is.
“Ideally the discrepancy would inform new theoretical ideas that would lead to new predictions – for example, of how we might find the particle that carries the new force, if that’s what it is. The final confirmation would then be building an experiment to directly discover that particle.”
The experiments at Fermilab are not the only ones to suggest the possibility of a fifth force: work at the LHC has also produced tantalising findings, albeit with a different type of experiment looking at the rate at which muons and electrons are produced as certain particles decay.
But Patel, who worked on the LHC experiments, said those results were now less coherent.
“They are different experiments, measuring different things, and there may or may not be a connection,” he said.
Butterworth added that the unexpected frequency of the muons’ wobbles was one of the longest-standing and most significant discrepancies between a measurement and the standard model.
“The measurement is a great achievement, and very unlikely to be in error now,” he said. “So if the theory predictions get sorted out, this could indeed be the first confirmed evidence for a fifth force – or something else strange and beyond the standard model.”

Actually, it's not bullchit if science revokes an earlier finding and makes a new claim in light of new evidence. This is why science is such a legitimate mode of enquiry, because when it revises a finding it doesn't mean science lied to you, it just learned more.

The paper is basically taking a fringe hypothetical about our understanding of redshift (tired light - which has always failed observational testing for nearly a century) and running with it. There are a bunch of other loosely related hypotheticals that the paper also relies on to arrive at the headline figure. More or less just an interesting thought experiment but doesn't challenge our best understanding at all.
This is a very common thing especially in physics. One person will write a paper which essentially says "if we add in certain extra assumptions (which may or may not have observational support - in this case it doesn't) then our understanding of a certain aspect of cosmology would be different". Which is a very standard thing for a theoretical physicist interested in cosmological models. This then gets repeated in the media and in popsci circles as "everything we know about X DISPROVEN by new science".
