I don't understand the "belief in a higher power" step. Why is that necessary to stop drinking alcohol?

how tf did you know I stopped? Is there some kind of aware joke that coincidentally applies to me? lol

Anyway, I used to drink regularly and then lockdown happened, basically went a year without drinking and realised I didn’t miss it much (srs)

When you go through a good treatment program, it's broken down really well. While I'm drinking or drugging, I give my power and my will over to that substance, and if I could stop on my own, I wouldn't need help from a 12 step program.

But I couldn't, so I came to believe that a higher power could restore me to sanity(the implication being my actions during active addiction were insane, which they were)

So the higher power thing, while for me is Jesus Christ, doesn't have to be a religious thing. It's a spiritual thing, it's the belief in something bigger than yourself
Alot of people start off with their higher power being the ocean , or AA as a group, or anything.

I was just trolling OP. Actually mirin response though. Belief in a higher power at one time helped me get sober too

That’s retarded not gonna lie

When I was at rehab it was based on 12 step and I was like “lol there is no higher power so how do I do the 12 steps”

And they told me that I should make a chair or a lamp my higher power

That’s when I realized AA and NA is retarded

I think they are better than you, because the whole point of AA is becoming more aware of your own defects and weaknesses, not judging other people, holding yourself accountable and becoming vulnerable (true manliness, not fake ego/mask man).
And no i dont go to AA but ive been before, and you sound like little highschool boy compared to some of those men that AA has changed.

Hey man to each their own. I don't think a chair or a lamp is a viable higher power , they say that to encourage people to believe in something. But hey man, if it's working out for you, you do you bro : ).
