Do you like Dos2 or Baldur's Gate 3 more?

Will preface this by saying I'm still on Act 2 in Dos2, and am waiting for the PS5 release of BG3.

I like Dos2 a lot. I'm not the best at it, and get my ass kicked a ton, but it's been fun powering through and slowly building up my talents and gear so that my team can take on the world.

I've never played a Baldur's Gate game before, but am familiar with dice rolls and such from DnD. Since I can't play for 2 more weeks, I want to kill time getting a discussion going.

As spoiler free as possible, which game do you prefer and why?

Which had the better combat? Exploration? Writing? Hunor? Leveling system?

DOS2 is great but BG3 is much better imo.

BG3 does almost everything better, especially things like combat, itemization, graphics, quests, etc. It's also more serious and tones down the humour from DOS2. Companions in DOS2 are better though and BG3's last act needs some cleaning up but a big patch is coming and knowing larian all bugs will get fixed in due time.

BG3 is probably the best RPG of the last 20 years.

hard to say because I haven't gotten that far.

DOS2 has a simpler and more straight forward combat/levelling/progression system that isn't based on DnD. For example you are not limited by spell slots, doing rests, etc. I appreciate that aspect but I also appreciate how complex BG3 is in that approach where classes have unique perks (i.e: Fighters being able to attack twice, Paladins breaking oaths, etc). Multi-classing makes the possibilities endless which is what makes the game great but I can see how it may overwhelm some. DOS2 has soft-multiclassing in the sense you can delve into melee/range fighting or maybe pick up spells from different schools of magic but it's not the same.

BG3 from my impression takes all the unique mechanics and gameplay from DOS2 and tunes it up several notches. Which is great. More builds, more classes, sub-classing, multi-classing, DnD, more strategy/thought because of spell slots, more RP possibilities, it's basically just more of everything.

But DOS2 has a certain charm to it that I love, almost that cartoonish humour but is dark and violent. The story is great too as well as the overall soundtrack. Feels very medieval fantasy like with a twist.

I'm only Level 4 in BG in Act 1 and am at this goblin camp so I really can't say too much, but am enjoying it thus far.

Funny part is that BG3 is based on D&D 5e and is seen as super easy/casual.

Only have a PS5 so still waiting for BG3 to come out crew

DOS2 was one of the most fun games I’ve ever played. That said, I’ve tried to replay it and just couldn’t. I think it’s too much for my pea sized brain. When I was playing it for the first time I often couldn’t play it for very long (especially after work) cause of how much thinking some of the harder fights required. During the first play through it had the novelty effect which let me push through it but it’s not enough for a replay

I’m playing skyrim again (last time I played it was a decade ago when it was release) while I’m waiting for it be released. Much more fitting for my pea brain

BG3 does everything so much better. It's not even a question.

The reviews, both from critics and users speak for themselves. The game deserves all the praise it's getting.

DOS2 still holds a very special place in my heart and I'll always go back to it .... However, BG3 is the far better game even though it's not as accessible as DOS2 .... Which is crazy since DOS2 now feels far more simplistic since BG3's release.

Hear good things about Baldur's Gate 3, but fantasy games never really captured me. Skyrim was boring, couldn't get into Witcher 3. All I've really seen from BG3 was some weird scene where a guy morphs into a bear to fuk some other dude, and a squirrel looks on in disgust.
Also saw some article today how a few of the voice actors were reading memes about their characters...in-character. Was really annoying, looked like complete dbags.

Dos2 probably makes me think harder than and RPG I've ever played. One wrong move could cost you the whole goddamn battle.

It's honestly not too bad, people get too caught up in the "dice rolls" ... Every game in this genre has a dice roll so to speak, it's just that this game literally has a dice roll.

The tutorial is done extremely well imo, and it always keeps telling you things. The game does require you to do a bit more reading ... As long as you're taking you're time and going through it slowly and actually reading things, everything makes more sense. If anything, this game does a better job tutorializing everything compared to DOS2.

There is a lot more drama than I expected and it does tend to throw you into fights you aren't ready for. I think the storyline is excellent and the mechanics are good. It reminds me a lot of fallout new Vegas where you can side with any of the factions, or none. You can be good evil or out for yourself. Definitely seeing multiple playthroughs to experience everything.

Yeah, but by level 20 you should be dialed in

My archer was doing 800 damage

Perks are much more important than actual armor numbers imo in dos2

They add up

Hard to put my finger on why but so far I've enjoyed DOS2 more than BG3. Out of the people here picking BG3 (which is like everybody) I wonder how many hours you've put into DOS2?

Objectively BG3 does most things better than DOS2 and it's basically a more polished version of the game. So I'm not sure why I prefer DOS2 so far. Maybe my opinion will change after putting in more hours into BG3, maybe it's a combination of the combat + story that makes me prefer DOS2 and my opinion won't change in the future.

i like baldurs gate 3 more in general as far as the game as a whole, however i found the combat in DOS2 to be more satisfying. It was nice being able to pull off big combos where your skills from different party members synergized well.

I'm leaning towards the combat because I find the general medieval setting to be quite appealing. The leveling up and making a build for a character is a bit unintuitive as well. It feels really weird to me that you can't raise abilities every time you level up.

I finished DOS:2 4 or 5 times, and I can see myself doing the same with BD3 but I can also say I enjoyed DOS:2 more.

There's something about the flexibility in class-building that I enjoy more. And contrary to what most people feel, I actually enjoyed the armor system in DOS:2 a lot. I'm a bit less into the dice rolls in DnD/BD3-- I feel like miss chances & odds of missing things in the open world are MUCH larger and I hate to be at the mercy of RNG all game.

I also liked the character-specific quests more in DOS:2 for some reason. Both are 9/10+ games for me though, I don't know.

played DOS2 5 years ago so can't remember too much, but I know I am infinitely more invested in BG3's story and characters than I was in DOS2. I really like BG3's combat but I remember DOS2's combat was really fun too. Another big thing though is the amount of choices in BG3 is just ridiculous.

It might be the best RPG ever made.

Yeah both are very high quality games, no doubt about that.

Maybe the BG3 system will grow on me. I can only give a truly honest judgement when I've completely both games.

I prefer the DoS:2 combat to BG3. The Party Members and overall story thus far is better in BG3. DoS:2 had more inherent humor while BG3 has more (almost annoyingly) sexuality. Both games are really well done, and imo each game has things that are better than the other game and both are very well done.

Can definitely see what you're saying here ... Although it is kinda possible in this game. Although I'm not sure if it is to the extent that DOS2 was.

I can pull off really nice synergies such as using Hold Person or making people go prone and then having my Lazael absolutely murder people with auto crits towards those cc'ed enemies.

And if you use another char to apply haste to Lazael ... Then they get one more action lol. She becomes a murder machine.

More testing / feedback is required for how synergies work though as I'm sure people are still trying to figure things out.

On a more personal note I do prefer the action economy of multiple actions per turn in DOS2, however the one turn / bonus action in BG3 is still pretty satisfying since it requires more strategy / thought.

BG3 is pretty much an objectively better game in terms of scope and customization etc, as it's pretty much the same engine/game as DOS2, worked on by the same people who made DOS2.

Story Wise they are comparable, BG3 is more girthy.

I enjoyed the combat system in DOS2 more than I do BG3. Not so say the combat in BG3 is bad. I just feel the stricter adherence to DnD rules (particularly spell slots/long rest type of mechanics) doesn't work as well for me. I don't miss Action Points. I like BG3's system more in that regard.

I also really enjoyed the Armor/Magic Armor system in DOS2 combat. I liked strategically damaging people so I could bring out the big CC abilities, rather than being able to cast them any time and hoping enemy rolls poorly.

Both are great games tho mang. I'm just sad in BG3 I can't be a Skeleton Weezard using AE poison spells that also heal me =(

You can, it's just under the druid class...instead of the necromancer subclass...

I like BG3 more. DOS2 was a great step up from DOS1, and while BG3 wears the Larian badge proudly, it's also toned down in the sense you aren't just CC'ing and turning the map into a fiery hellscape everytime. You can, but it's way less the focus. You can still take advantage of the environment and your cool abilities, its just not the focus and more on resource conservation in many circumstances.

The story and dialogue is way more fleshed out and refined and the fact you can restart the game 5 times and it plays out differently every time is fantastic. I like the 5e system in general better, and that allows lots of customization. It's no pathfinder, but it's still a great representation of the system.

If you have an Amazon acct, they were giving away Baldur’s gate 2 for free, though Amazon games. I’m playing that now.
