I only found out later that Kotzen was part of the Becker/Gilbert/Friedman crew. Glad he went the way he did. Much more refreshing and original compared to just shred guitar.

Indeed. I love the technical chops of the shred guitar "genre" (I'm thinking of the crew Mike Varney signed), but found the harmony to become quite trite and old-hat after awhile. Eventually, I think the serious guitarist wants to hear and play more complex stuff than basic maj/min arpeggios, harmonic minor scales etc.

It's at that time I discovered jazz fusion, as would a lot of other people and a whole new world of music theory and harmony. Along with the nuances and creativity involved with "playing outside".

Dunlop Jazz II's. A rounded edge which is nice for jazzy tones but pointed enough for lead work. I also had a Tortex which was thicker and good for crunchy metal work.

I remember reading about a special designed pick that some amateur dude created, which I read about in Guitar World aeons ago. It could alter the thickness on the go, which would have been perfect for the chit I was doing. I can't for the life of me remember WTF it was called.

walked into a Mom and Pop shop 1400 miles from home, and after 2 years of looking for one just to test drive, there was a Gibson SJ200.

Instantly in love. Huge sound, but wow it sounds so clear: you can pick out each note perfectly. I was expecting it to be a big, deep sound, maybe even a little muddy, but it's so clear and balanced

The JB matched up pretty close with the paint. Was going to go with black, but they had the pink one on sale for 25% off for obvious reasons, LMAO. Reading 16.9 on the multimeter

Explain functionally how and why the diminished and dominant chords work as substitutes.

Cept I never called or implied anyone was a peasant, nor was I condescening to anyone. I simply said I found jazz to offer a level of complexity the 80s shredders weren't offering (which makes sense, since heavy distortion won't work with that complex a harmony, really).

It's simply an autobiographical comment, which for some weird reason, prompted your little pop quiz. FYI, Tony Macalpine made a similar progress. He was an archetypal 80s shredder but formed the CAB band with Bunny Brunel and Dennis Chambers in the 90s which was jazz fusion.

It's a very simple question, which would immediately prove to me and everyone here that you've at least spent some time studying jazz harmony and aren't just saying these things to make yourself look good. I once asked z4v4 something similar, and he answered perfectly. To be fair tho, I didn't actually doubt z4's claims so my attitude was different, whereas with you I'm not so sure. The fact that you're refusing to explain the chord progression is very sus.

Once again, here it is, it's just three chords:

If you can't explain what that is (or isn't, in case I just wrote 3 random chords that make no sense to try and trick you) there's no way you're well versed in jazz harmony.

No, I wasn't. I'm speaking of the limitations of harmony in a particular genre of music, not attacking any one in particular. Of course a limited harmony will sound trite after awhile, it's just the way the ear works.

Z4v4 correctly identified you as springing a pretty childish gotcha, and he actually poses a better question IMO. Yours is missing some vital context IMO: What key is it? Jazz progressions don't necessarily start from the root chord.

Z4v4 asked about chord substitutions. The diminished chord substitution has the same notes as the original chord sans sharing the root. If you eliminate the root you have the same notes, and your bass player for example, could shape the chord by choosing the root note. Why might you choose it? From memory it'd create a stronger desire in the ear for resolution to the root chord, or it could give you options for diminished scales/arpeggios over the chord.

The second concept he poses is the tritone substition, where you substitute a 7th chord for one a tritone away (flattened fifth). Why? Offers a nice chromatic descension in your root notes of the chord progression if you're doing a II-V-I.

That, IMO, is a perfect explanation Z4v4 would be happy with. I didn't even have to look back over the page, I worked from memory of what I thought he wrote.





See, I'm not really thinking you were acting in good faith here. I think he correctly called you on making a pretty childish gotcha. You could have been doing the DDSF1 thing where I jump through your hoops and you find an excuse to keep it going, like he accuses me of faking my transcript, you could have just said "Ha! You googled that!".
