FEMA is broke af

FEMA is down to its last $3.4 billion as Maui wildfires, Hurricane Idalia slam U.S.

FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell said this week that the U.S. disaster relief fund has a balance of $3.4 billion, which will beexhausted in the first half of September.

With funds running low, FEMA is prioritizing the immediate needs of people impacted by the Maui wildfires, Hurricane Idalia that swept through Florida and potential future storms.

President Joe Biden called on Congress Thursday to pass $12 billion in additional funding for the disaster fund by next month, at the latest, when hurricane season reaches its peak.

“We’re going to need a whole hell of a lot more money,” Biden said.

They’re lucky they even have a few billion left. Ukraine deserves it. This country is so ungrateful.

I love that conservatives are complaining that we're sending too much money to Ukraine, as if Republicans are famous for trying to reign in unnecessary military expenditures. What party directs a trillion dollars to the Pentagon every year again? Crickets.

Oh that's right, its only bad when Biden does it.

They've actually been giving money to states with emergency declarations for migrant crisis too. That might have played a role in depleting the money supply

This is someone that just completely ignored everything that happened during Trump's term.

There are probably dozens of threads just on this message board celebrating Trump not starting any new wars.

What you're confused with is neocon politicians and actual conservative people. People don't care about wars, politicians who get kickbacks from DoD lobbyists do.

They're not. I never asserted that. My post was simply calling out the hypocrisy of conservatives.

If you're lamenting lacking funds for disaster aid in your country, trying to blame aid to Ukraine without reckoning with the much larger waste of money that your party enables is silly. I don't recall Republicans being particularly jazzed about increasing funding for disaster relief in general, that is, until a disaster hits one of their states.

You mean when a riot hits a city, and the mayor is asking for federal aid afterwards?

missed the point there chief

at least money to the MIC remains domestic and benefits Americans rather than the money going to Ukraine

Ah okay, if we're playing splitsies because Trump voters don't align with the Republican party - I also agree that Trump was right to not start any wars. Does that not mean you also think we spend too much money on the military and would support cuts to it? In that case, we agree and there's no problem here.

Yeah, the difference is it's OUR military and OUR pentagon.

Ukraine was a 3rd world Eastern European shiithole that none of you could even find on a map just a couple of years ago - and probably still can't.

Can't say I recall that either... because maybe disaster relief isn't an issue until... you know, a disaster happens.

Sweet source. Even if it is more, I doubt you'll find that its more "handouts" than military expenditures.

No I mean when a hurricane hits Florida and scummy senators like Marco Rubio and Rick Scott denying FEMA funding to other states but happy to request it for their own.

Yes republicans support lots of positions that are counter intuitive to the goals of the ideaology.

Which is still preferable to actual mental illness self hating anti individualistic ideology.

Either way gaslighting people by obfuscating this situation with past ones, just further buries the differences and current extreme urgency. Example; we’ve never outright given our military budget with such little American oversight. What would be actual reasoning behind not auditing expenditures. Security is a bullchit reason, we can have classified documents, it’s ok. We have evidence money was squirreled away into FTX, and there was a long history of already shady payments to Zelenskyy from oligarchs and media funds that continue paying disbursements despite Zelenskyy being forced to give up ownership.

Giving people in those situations which aren’t even a current democracy (when’s their next elections). Is a whole new frontier of corruption for this country.

Ah okay, so this is a view somewhere in between neocon's prolific use of the military vs Trump's relative non-use. Spending $800B/yr to do nothing but maintain is okay as long as it stays in American hands, got it. I don't support NATO or imperialism in general, so I don't support sending funds there either, but for a different reason other than "its not spending on our military".

Definitely best to wait til the stakes and emotions are high to allocate funds for reasonably expected disasters. Good governance.

Yes.

I mean seriously, WTF am I supposed to say to that anyway? And hell, I'll even admit that I'm not a big fan of the F-22 and F-35 fighters because of their price tags. But given a choice between my tax dollars going for just ONE of those, or the same amount to Ukraine..?

Ain't she pretty?

Cliffs: I do not give one single fuk about Ukraine and I do not want one dollar of my tax money spent on it.

I'm just as leery of the Pentagon and the MIC as you sound, I also find it appalling that we give so much money to the DoD without the ability to complete an audit on them. I also don't support all this aid to NATO and the Ukraine, but I don't have to do any mental gymnastics to support both our bloated military apparatus and also oppose aid to Ukraine.

gotta look big picture too - how many people are employed by Lockheed? How many are employed by Lockheed suppliers? (you'd be surprised how many small and medium sized businesses exist who's only customers are defense contractors - some of whom only supply one contractor - and some of those only supply one part to one aircraft of one contractor) how many businesses exist to support those contractors indirectly.

I would rather take the much more meaningful share of dat dere sweet free money from the Pentagon to fund the disaster budget. If that includes funds that would have otherwise gone to aiding Ukraine, even better!

Pretty easy to condemn wasteful spending by agency officials. Even if it turns out they're getting a free stay or a severely discounted rate - it's bad for optics. The rest of bureaucrats are expected to abide by strict ethics rules that include even the "appearance of a conflict of interest" so pushing back on officials not doing it is fair game.

I think you're confused here.. OUR defense budget has fukall to do with Ukraine.

You can loathe the pentagon all you want bro, but the free money for Ukraine is coming from another bucket.
