Yep, a lot of the McMansions that have been built since the 90s are usually built cheaply with substandard materials to be thrown up quick. Also, while I don't want to live in a shoebox, I at least want some space in the yard for working on cars and stuff.

Grandparents on both sides raised law abiding citizens (4/5 kids) in 1000 sq ft homes. Growing up in a working class small town, most people I went to school with lived in <1500 sq ft homes with their parents and siblings.

And a lot of people have the mindset of getting the MOST they can possibly afford...biggest home, biggest vehicle, biggest fanciest vacation, etc -- this is what keeps them working slaves until death or age 70 when they can barely move anymore. It's just a mindset that was engraved into from generations of people that had it engraved into them.

Yep. TBH when I put the bid in for my house, I didn't even see part of it until the home inspector showed it in his report However, it was the only one decent for the money at the time and I did need more house at the time. Now, it's just me and the dogs. You are right though, most people have that mentality.

A lot of the newer homes built by dr horton are sketchy.

I agree with this. 1500 minimum living area (kitchen, living room, bedrooms, bathrooms) if you intend to have a family. Basement gives you a gym and a nice family room.

First home was 1400 sqft. Very doable for any family. 2nd home 2900 sq ft. I enjoy the extra rooms as well as the larger yard/pool etc

Yeah, and people before them did not have plumbing. You should save money on your water bill by doing that also. You could also do something productive to produce value to afford a modern standard of living while also investing or saving money.

Keep rotting though. I am sure those around you have respect for your mindset. It is like those hyper mileage twats that drive around coasting their cars and pissing everyone off.

i just can't get motivated to obtain a home gym when there's a ymca less than 1 mile from my house with pools, basketball courts, sauna, steam room, etc.

Define: "modern standard of living".

Plumbing instead of an outhouse -- sure.
A car instead of a horse -- most definitely

The need for a 3,000+ sq ft house -- ???

And BTW -- I love hypermiling!!

In fact, I've found a new appreciation it. As a retired person, I have no where to be at any certain time so I can drive slowly to save on gas AND reduce wear on my vehicle. Saving money AND pissing off the working bees that already hate life and feel pushed to the edge!

BTW -- I'm getting 25.8 mpg in a non hybrid gasoline truck!!!

You went from 1000 being perfect to over 3000 being too much. That is quite a gap.

The indoor plumbing was due to your poor comparison to houses our grandparents raised their families in to modern standards of not living on top of each other (immigrants excluded). Seems like a silly statement since people have survived with much less in the past.

The hyper mileage twat was me saying you sound like a hyper mileage twat which is what you self admittedly are.

You give a strong impression of someone trying to justify their choice of lifestyle to themselves by constantly telling everyone else how great their choice was. We all know deep down you are not happy with what you have become and I sincerely hope you come to better terms with yourself.

Nothing inherently wrong with 2 siblings close in age sharing a bedroom. Fact.

Two siblings sharing a bedroom is a far cry from not having indoor plumbing or riding horses instead of cars.

The level of anger/name calling in your posting and projection about "you must be unhappy" over some trivial thing like someone feeling 1000 sq ft is a good size for homes speaks volumes about your mental state homie. I feel bad that negativity has overcome you in such a way. Are you going to church tomorrow?

Get a mile closer to downtown and you're now going to be paying $550-800 per sq ft even if it was built during the disco era. Not sure where you got the anger from. Just stated hyper mileage people are twats and made the observation that you are the militant vegan version of a povertycel.

I am actually quite chill right now. Laying on a sofa on a beach in Spain listening to waves crash.

Over the past few months I have just noticed the threads you are constantly making as if you are on an ethical crusade which appears to be more a battle between you and your shadow.

I never understood having a huge house with tons of space unless you plan on raising a big family with about half a dozen kids in it. All that extra space always seem like such a chore to maintain. Everyone I've known who buys huge homes always invariably end up spending many hundreds, if not thousands of extra dollars a month filling it with stuff, much of which they will barely use over the years. Almost every dude I know who buys a place like that ends up moaning about how they can't wait to sell it some day.

Hitting on a lot of truth there. Granted, I don't begrudge anyone for wanting what they want (I know how angry some get). The stories you hear of people retiring and greatly downsizing are extremely common...in retirement they want less worries and not the job of running a home larger than what they need.

This is the kind of thing that makes me shake my head at housebuilding in the US. With the amount of red tape and permits involved, the threshold of build quality that gets signed off is horrifically low.

At the price point of the average home, $10-20k extra spend on materials would improve the average new build far more in percentage terms than it would increase the price.

Instead of states requiring solar, eco boilers etc, require higher standards in basic construction.
Screw nature; my body will do what I DAMN WELL tell it to do!

The only dangerous thing about an exercise is the person doing it.

They had the technology to rebuild me. They made me better, stronger, faster......

The constant attempts at justification and validation are the concerning thing.

His threads consist of him approving statements by anyone that agrees with his initial statement, disagreeing with anyone that has a contrary opinion, mocking people that have jobs, and arguing with people that call him out for being a rotter.
