Question for dog owners

I'm currently house searching, once I finally land one I'd like to get a German shepherd.. problem is I am a fishing fanatic and 5 months a year I go hard fishing and leave at 7 pm and come home at 1:30am/2 am. Is this too much time to be away from a German shepherd for 5 months a year? I do work from home so I can take occasional breaks and play and walk with it.. should I just get two so they have each other while I'm out fishing?? Is it cruel to do that to one dog?

I don't think a puppy would be able to go that long without going out, but an adult dog should. You also shouldn't get a german shepherd unless you have time to exercise them really well and also brain work. They're beautiful dogs but they are working dogs, not couch potatoes.

That’s too long for any dog and most certainly a German Shepherd.



HOWEVER, you can absolutely take one with you. That would be no issue at all. I don’t know anything about fishing but even if you boat fish they make legit dog life vests. Take it with you.


Edit: Hell the dog would probably ****ing love it. Working home is extremely helpful throughout the day but I see no reason you couldn’t take the dog fishing.

The bolded- that's not true. It's only 7 hours. That's less time than a lot of people sleep at night. Most adult big dogs should be fine for 7 hours without going outside.

I do agree he should take the dog with him fishing. The dog would prob love it.

You gotta watch Shepherds whilst fishing.

My wife's sister has one and her bf caught a good bass this summer. It leapt out of the boat and grabbed the fish. Chit show ensued.


Hooks in the dogs face can lead to a real bad day for all involved.

I fish from shore, there are certain spots I have to crawl over slippery rocks and couldn't bring it, certain spots I could definitely bring it he'd have to be a well behaved boy and not get behind me when I cast and I also don't want him biting the fish lol . But definitely I'd love to bring it to certain spots sometimes.

Labrador would be able to stay in one spot and shepherd according to other poster would not be able to contain himself this sound right?

The constant motion of a lure being dangled in front of its face, then slung far far away and magically appearing again will seem like the most fun game of fetch possible. He may also go after every bird/animal he/she sees. Been fishing with dogs on a boat several times and it was HELL. You need a trained, chill dog that has been there done that and understands to sit when when told.

But if you gut hook an undersized bass hell slurp it up before the DNR comes a looking lmao.

First things that come to mind:


- type of dog will depend on size of your yard. A German Shepherd would need a large yard

- I always recommend people get two dogs. You won’t have as much time for the dog as you think, but having another dog allows for a happier life for the pet. You can play with both of them, or just let them out to run and play with each other

- dogs have probably been the biggest winners in this whole wfh shift we’ve seen since 2020. That being said, you’ll still be working a lot…so while it helps for you to be home, he won’t be getting a ton of interaction for that part of the day

- German shepherds are very smart so you could train them to go fishing and behave, but it would require lots of patience and consistency.

My buddy takes a gamedog with him fishing and has a sort of short teather that clips to the top of the dogs vest. Just short enough for the dog to move around but not jump out of the boat.

You'll be fine.

owned several expensive GSDs. they are very obedient and my GSD has always been able to be in her crate for 8 hours. even longer but I don't like going longer than 8.

a lot depends on when she feeds and defecates. make sure your dog defecates prior to leaving. My GSD shyts on command.

they are not like typical povertycel dogs (aka pits and shelter defects).

btw: for the most part all my GSDs require very little training and are very obedient. had a great gsd that I could have left at starbucks if I wanted to for an hour and could come back and sitting in same position unleashed.

they aren't dumb dogs.

Correct. Retrievers are designed to sit still for extended periods of time and then retrieve a bird or other animal. Shepherds on the other hand are designed to constantly move and guide a flock. And when deciding on a dog you should make it easier for both yourself and your dog by putting them in an environment best suited for them. Working against their instincts will be a lot more difficult and still probably won’t be optimal compared to a dog doing what’s natural to them.

I was going to say if OP puts in the time and also purchases a quality GSD. You can certainly train one to follow certain protocols when fishing.


Taking dogs fishing is a non issue imo. It’s done all the time.


OP I say go for it but do NOT buy a ****ty bred GSD.

You are a certified moron if you get a pet dog if you are single and have time commitments outside of the home resembling anything like a full-time job.

What you described doesn't sound too bad, but why not just take the dog fishing with you? Why get an awesome dog like a German Shepherd if you aren't going to take it on adventures like that with you? That's like 75% of the reason to get a dog like that in the first place, and you want to leave it at home for all that?
