can't get a blood test unless a doctors allows you to...

what type of a communist country is this??

you can't just walk into a lab and pay for them to take a blood sample and test it...

you have to:
-book appointment with family doctor or go to walk-in (wait hours)
-ask uninterested boomer doctor for permission to get blood tested and explain why like you're a child
-get requisition (form from doctor outlined what they're supposed to test, nothing more or less)
-not sure if you have to pay doctor for this too
-then go to lab with form

Pretty sure you can get lots of blood tests done without a doctor if you pay out of pocket. Also, it’s pretty easy to find doctors who will order a blood test for you, assuming again that you pay out of pocket.

If you do a blood request form from an aging clinic you pay for the test.

But the clinic won’t charge you until you have an appointment with them.

So set it up, then never go to clinic

For the record I got quoted over 2k for all the blood draws/tests if I didn’t run it through doctors/insurance.

you can pre purchase an labs you want done thru Quest and just make an appointment. Had my test checked 3 weeks ago, cost me 60$

I’ve never had a good experience with a doctor as an adult.

When I was a kid my pediatrician was incredible. Very compassionate, patient and comforting. I used to enjoy going to see her.

But I’ve gone through 3 primary physicians so far in my 20s and they’ve all been dogchit. They don’t give a single fuk about my concerns, they just try to rush me out of their office and push pills as an easy fix. I’ll never forget the time I showed up for my appointment, the doctor told me I seem healthy so no need to see me today, and he sent me home with another appointment scheduled 6 weeks later. Of course billed my insurance for the visit tho…

Doing this right now, I have insurance but didn’t feel like asking my Dr, was just curious on some labs I’ve always wanted to know. Also don’t go through quest, go through a discount lab site that uses quest, it’s usually cheaper.

At least you didn’t have a guy nerd out about your restaurant then try to stick his finger in your butt. “Hey boyo can’t we do anything else to check”. “Well… I guess we could do a blood draw to see if the check is necessary”. And I 180, realized my error, finished a 360 spin and slowly backed out the room.

there's plenty of for-profit blood testing places everywhere that do them

You can run your own tests through the insurance. It takes a bit of know-how, but there's nothing explicitly denying it. I've had to do it before.

It is.

I had an appointment scheduled to follow up on some heart palpitation and high blood pressure concerns.

I had been taking readings at home which were a little elevated but close to normal, however at the office they recorded something like 160/90.

I got my vitals checked by the nurse, all standard procedure.

Then the doctor comes in and I showed him a paper with my at home readings. He glanced for maybe 3 seconds and said word for word “well if these are normal then we don’t need to do anything today. Let’s follow up in 6 weeks” He wouldn’t even recheck my blood pressure manually. He just seemed too busy to give a chit srs.

This doctor had previously gotten rustled when I refused to take anxiety medication. He was pushing some zombie pills on me because he thought anxiety was raising my blood pressure, which even if it was, shouldn’t lifestyle changes be the main focus instead of drugging up otherwise healthy early 20s patients?

I skipped the follow up appointment and ended up seeing a cardiologist my grandmother knew, who ordered an echocardiogram, Holter monitor and prescribed me lisinopril for mild hypertension. Very different standards of care.
