Sober September

Sipping on my last beer for a while, srs. Gonna miss it, at least for the first week, every "sober <month>" it's that way. You go a week and wish for it, then you make it to two weeks and beyond and you get a little smug and ego boost about it, judging alcoholcels and being proud of your Caloric deficit results (or ability to eat more unhealthy foods justifiably).

We all have our reasons to commit to this thing. I'll go over mine: A fairly major (to me) presentation in a fairly large (100+ people) "conference" for work that's coming up in October. I've been WFH and antisocial forever. I hate public speaking, and the last time I did it (college) it went TERRIBLE and I'm lucky I even passed that class, srs. I'm talking about invoking my inner Karate Kid or Rocky. I believe that by staying sober, and committing more to the gym / diet in general, I will achieve a physique (get leaner) within a month that will make me MOG with superiority, srs. And when I get on stage, my brain will be focused, cunning, and flexible - as all the sloots in the crowd 'mire, and execs wanna promote me.

Benefits of sobriety:

- No hangovers
- No blackouts (doing chit you don't even remember and possibly regret)
- No DUI risk (if you're prone to driving sometimes despite drinking)
- Less empty calories, possibly less carbs (if beer/mixed/seltzer), therefore can eat more food in general justifiably
- Improving overall health, especially for kidneys and liver, more hydrated consistently
- Can encourage you to do better in terms of fitness and nutrition
- Save money, especially if you're one to buy drinks at places

Bump, not too late to hop on board.

In the OP I mentioned that I was gonna buy a bunch of beers and bring it to a party. I hate parties and socializing, particularly with people I barely or don't even know, and especially with this thought in my brain that I'll be the only sober one there. Turns out I was right, everyone was getting hammered. Party was mostly lame/awkward srs, didn't know anyone there, and everyone was kinda uncomfortable. I 100% would've pre-gamed, but didn't.

When I went to the store to pick up the beers, I was super super close to buying a tallboy or 2 for myself, just to cope, but managed to avoid it.

i don't believe in such absolutes. why not just drink socially only? don't drink at home.

also - stick with beer only and always Uber.

12.5 months sober here. Life has definitely got better without the heavy drinking. Although I do miss my tequila nights and think about them here and there.

Good luck to you guys

spirits if you drink neat, with ice cubes or use water as a mixer (cheat code to avoiding bad hangovers srs it's what I do) is far better for you than beer srs.

Bad advice. Always stick with beer. It’s a lot easier to drink a ton of liquor than it is to drink a ton of beer - in equivalent alcohol. Beer has more volume and takes longer to drink and fills you up. You can milk a beer - it's hard to milk a small mixed drink with ice. Less alcohol means less hangover. Liquor is like jet fuel, rocket fuel.

Tequila especially is jet fuel. Rocket fuel. Highly flammable and combustible. The Devil’s Juice.

So take these words of advice. And remember, you heard them from a poor sinner, got no more cause to lie, 'cause he's going to meet his Maker.

why does everything have to be all or nothing? i do excess in moderation.

drink socially. don't drink alone. especially don't drink home alone.

go out to the bar a couple times a month, have a few beers, and talk to some girls!

there is no nobility in sobriety. or poverty.

it's Saturday night! now get out there tonight and have some fun while you still can! don't waste your time on this earth!

what would Jimmy Buffett do if he was allowed another day?

I never view "Sober <Month>" with any inkling of permanence srs. I don't view it as an absolute, or extreme. It's merely a temporary subscription to assist with cutting, or if you've self reflected and realized you've been drinking too much lately and wanna make a drastic change, possibly with intent to drink again in smaller quantities and frequencies down the road.

Bump, not too late to sign up!

I know Sober October rhymes, but who doesn't want a drink or two on Halloween?!

I already feel like I have more energy, but could be placebo or due to other factors. Fully hydrated all day is a noticeable change, and I do feel a little lighter on my feet. Feels nice to eat a little more junk food here and there (nothing crazy of course), with less guilt since I know I'm not giving up 500-1k Calories to alcohol.

Nah, all the good Oktoberfest beers start come out now.

I'll drop hard liquor until Halloween though.

Was gonna delay bumping but saw the Ratfish thread and felt like we could use it.

Day 5, staying alive. Main differences I've noticed is being more energetic, and feeling justified in eating some unhealthier things from time to time.

Might get in on this. Had a rough night last weekend and was planning on taking a break. Feelsbadman though cus drinking was my last fun hobby - joints too fukt up for everything else. Oh well, knee surgery on Wednesday (see username), so we'll see how that goes.

Day 5 and noticing a difference? Do you usually drink daily? Wouldn't have expected that from you. I stick to weekends myself.

I’m coming up on 11 months sober boyos! Luckily I didn’t need a liver transplant and probably never will. Only would need that if I started drinking again.

Let’s do this guise. Feel free to post in the Sobriety sticky at the top of the Misc guise, or even just browse as we are a supportive group of brahs who want to live healthy lives of recovery

My "normal" is 2-3 days a week. However in the last couple of months its been probably 5 days a week. Normally 4-6 drinks worth tbh. Work stresses me out sometimes, heavier responsibilities compared to what I'm used to, and what most people on my team have. Including being forced to do some chit Ihatedoing (public speaking).

GL on knee surgery, that's a really big deal but high success rates and results at least. What'd you do to wreck it?

Day 8 and I'm feeling about the same as Day 5. There's a stickied thread on the misc titled "Sober October," from last year, that I was the OP for. I logged everything, including my fitness, weight, and Calories. Not doing that this time, already regret that I haven't been doing it to see the numbers.

EDIT:

I see. Guess that's not too crazy, but I certainly wouldn't want to sustain that, yeah. Much more of a binge drinker myself.

Started off as ordinary patellar tendonitis from lifting, and then I just pushed it way too hard to where it was a big problem. At this point, it only messes with my ability to sit for prolonged periods, and my current doc is thinking it's the plica (useless membrane folds). The surgery is just an arthroscopy, so yeah, shouldn't be a big deal. If she decides the plica are looking off, she'll shave em down and hopefully that's that finally.

Day 14.

Was at a gas station and considered the idea of grabbing a drink and saying screw it. But realized there was too much potential for regret of not finishing out the month, didn't seem worth the limited pleasures. Plus if I did it, why not do it again next week? Nah.

Gonna keep with it.

I've not been as able to go to the gym lately as much as I'd hoped, and I have been eating like chit on the occasion, so I don't really feel worthy of the extra empty Calories and carbs anyways.

I think the main difference between how I feel on the daily now, versus how I felt 14 days ago, is probably slightly less volatility in my mood, and a little less anxiety as a whole. Less drama going on in my brain I guess.
