I will give my child her first home -- the best way to set a person up for life

This 2023...forget college and all that herd mentality crap.

The best way to set a child up for life is to be in a position to give them their first home free and clear.

This is providing they demonstrate the appropriate character, values, responsibility and integrity.

This puts them on a track to really chase their dreams and do what makes them happy in life.

If they really want college they can still go, but the biggest anchor in life is out of their way.

Yes. All my children will get their first home.

The home will likely stay in my name (can't lose in a divorce or something else) but it will be their home.

What you just said sounds like gobbly gook but what do you say of parents that give their children free college educations?

My daughter is in Kindergarten and I save like crazy for her, as you can never beat the time value of money. I have her 529 fully funded, a retirement started for her, and a large savings account for her. My goal is to give her the money for her first house, college paid for and hopefully enough money that she can choose the career she wants. If she wants to be teacher and save the world one kid at a time making 40k a year, I'd like for there to be enough money for her not to starve doing so.

I never said they wouldn't get a used car (although safe so likely not more than 10-15 years old). I'm not just dumping a new home on them at 18. I have to see through their character that they are the type of person I raised them to be. Perhaps the home comes at age 24...perhaps 28. Just depends.

I probably agree with this. Something about giving children too easy of a life (or the guarantee of a future easy life) rubs me the wrong way.

What kind of house you planning on gifting ? You shouldn’t be taking on a mortgage for it but buying it so let’s say 500k.

You could have a 500k home sitting ready for them at 18 with a whole host of new responsibilities and upkeeps and expenses.

Or you could have a 500k trust fund that kicks out fukkin 25k a year in interest payments while they rent and figure out the world, and will still be there 10 years later when they might have a better idea exactly what the fuk they should be doing with that money wether it’s a house and family or investing or a business etc…

Yeah my parents did that to me and I think they were smart by doing that. Even parents that just have enough are probably well served by making their kids think they are poorer than they actually are. Once you get expensive taste and nothing but expensive things can satisfy you...it's sorta a bad cycle.

Not a home that's TOO fancy...just working/middle class. I don't like the idea of kicking out money to them while they figure out life. The homes don't just sit waiting for them...they are rented out until the time is right.

The 25 or so years leading up to it are where those things are hopefully figured out. House stays in my name though.
