It means people were a lot more careful to not have kids during the Great Depression. An economic downturn happens in the US, people have less kids. It happened during the stagnation of the 1970s too, reaching an all-time low in 1978. As soon as the Great Recession unfolded in 2008 the birth rate the following year dropped, even though it had been slowly climbing since 1978.

If we have an official recession in the next year the birth rate will drop again, to a new all-time low a year later.

We have too many people anyway.

Also the fertility rate in the US had been dropping since at least 1800. US women were averaging:

-7.03 kids per woman in 1800
-3.94 kids per woman in 1900
-Down to 3.29 kids per woman in 1920

And the fertility rate kept dropping in the Roaring 20s with women's lib movements having made great strides.

The Great Depression accelerated the declining birth rates that had already been happening.
The Baby Boom that began at the end of WW2 was a complete anomaly in birth rates


And there are other factors influencing fertility rates besides the economy. As far as total populations go you have to factor in immigration at the time as well.

-Ukraine has always been a poor country. Women in poor countries still had lots of babies before The Pill.
-The US was the wealthiest in the world when the Great Depression hit. Women in wealthy countries have less kids during economic downturns, so there is less population growth.

-Not only did foreign immigration nearly stop into the US during the Great Depression, the US govt repatriated (sent back) Mexicans to Mexico during the Great Depression. FDR's policy toward Mexicans made Trump look like a hippie. So not only did they send them back, Mexican immigrant women were having 8 kids per woman at that time. That's A LOT of lost US population growth from 1930-40.

The Baby Boom was a phenomenon that happened across the western world, especially in the US. No western women did not become less educated. There are several factors that caused the Baby Boom. It can be explained, but it's also long and detailed.

There's not a lot of resources dedicated to keeping track of exactly how many Mexicans were repatriated during the Great Depression? And you're ignoring the fact that immigration to the US slowed to a crawl during the Great Depression. People do give a schit about deaths directly caused by a dictator though. Even then it's a range of 4-7 million directly from the Stalin commanded famine itself, more deaths from secondary effects the famine caused (murder, cannibalism), plus the gulags.

At least the famine later on in China under Mao can mostly be attributed to incompetencies of socialism/communism.

Immigration act of 1924 had already reduced it substantially.

But something tells me even with lowered emigration and all the American Women getting PhDs all of sudden during the 1920's (and for some strange reason, all of them losing their PhDs post WW2 lmao) US still fared much worse post Great Depression than Ukraine did post so called Holodomor.
