The main thing that is missing from today's video game world

Do you remember back in the day when you would always look forward to the next gen of consoles or the latest graphics card to see just how much more real the graphics looked? Buying EGM and gamepro and next generation just to read up on the new technology and get a pic of the upcoming next gen games and having that wow factor

It's pretty much hit the ceiling in terms of realism. The only true next step is true lifelike graphics

But that wow factor that was there when it jumped from snes and Genesis to the N64 and when it jumped from N64 and psx to the dreamcast.

Those days are gone mates. The excitement is gone. At least when it comes to that.

Not jaded at all. I don't even own a oc or a console at the present and have not been able to play anything in quite some time but what I said is just the fact of the matter. Of course you have to be my age or close to even relate to what I am talking about

I dunno, brah.

Gameplay + concept > graphics within reason.

Original GTA was a bird's eye 2D bonaza that was graphically behind the state of the art but absolutely a blast to play.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

Started with Atari 2600 in the 80s and thought it was next level sci-fi chit that you could move a clump of pixels around the screen using a joystick in your hand.

I remeber getting Atari 2600 xmas of 82. Combat and pacman. Raiders of the lost arc were the first games I had. Never could find that damn arc of the convenient

That's a bold claim. Dark Souls, Skyrim, Cod modern warfare 3, Arkham City, and Portal 2 were released in 2011. Along with Terraria and Minecraft. I had to Google it, I only knew of Skyrim and Dark souls off the top of my head. What games were released this year that are close to that quality?

I think it's safe to say anything shigaru myamoto does is going to be stellar. Look at all the big budget Zelda games. The soundtracks, game quality . Budgets can make it or break it. All about creativity

Agreed

First video game I had was game boy

The jump from game boy to n64 was mind blown at the time

And then n64 to game cube

And then game cube to x360 was crazy. And online gaming blew my mind

And then after that it was meh

That actually looks pretty solid. I guess I'm just getting sick of videogames. They don't hold my interest like they used to

I always thought n64 kinda looked like chit. I grew up with nes then snes. For me the big jumps were:

Atari/nes to snes - major jump in graphics and sound quality, near arcade level

Snes to ps2/xbox - from great looking side scrollers to legit 3d gfx that matched pc quality at the time (within reason). N64 was far below pc quality when it came out and worse than dreamcast.

Ps2/xbox to ps4/xbox one - from decent 3d to high level realism.

To me the ps3/360 and current gen are in-betweeners that are just 2.0 incremental upgrades of last gen. Wondering if ps6 next gen will be the big leap or if big leaps, like with smartphones, are no longer on the table.

I like video games but haven't played in forever because the games started all looking the same and I was never a big fan of third-person open world type games. Very little variety just in how the games look if I skim through a bunch of game reviews.

There is hardly any innovation in gaming to make anything unique or take a chance on something new. All the major gaming companies go with the safe option of open world with slightly better graphics. Sure, the graphics now a days are insane but a few hours in and it feels like every other open world game that I've gotten bored of.

They also put too much emphasis on the story and not enough on game play. So you end up with an alright story that's just a pain in the ass to get through anyhow.

RDR2 is probably the only game that made me feel like a kid again. I found myself actually invested in the world and exploring just to see what other cool **** they may have thought of while having a blast in the meantime. The funny thing is, all they did was fix a majority of the issues that have been plaguing open world games for years now.

What started to ruin my interest in games is prioritizing graphics over content. DO BOTH. And then it was beta testing on paying customers. It's one thing to have a few bugs in a super complex game, and another thing to release an unfinished game and rely on the customers to find the bugs for you.

This.

Gameplay >>>> Graphics. But now that graphics, engines, and hardware, have come such a long way, it simultaneously becomes increasingly obvious when a dev team chooses to focus more on graphical acuity at the expense of the innovative gameplay experience. And the opposite is true, because "2010's graphics" (PS4 / Xbone) is still passable in 2020's, if the gameplay is outstanding. Remnant 1+2 are good examples of that. A more extreme example is Vampire Survivors and Blasphemous, those games look like they could've come from a PS2/Xbox or even older gen, yet still are considered highlight games in the modern era. If a game manages to both have great graphics and great gameplay, it rises to the pinnacle, examples being RDR2 and God of War 1, both released in 2018.

The majority of modern (2010's) Assassin's Creed games are a good example of dev teams pushing the hardware as far as they can for great graphics, but the gameplay experience isn't much of an innovation over its predecessors. Forspoken is a bit of an extreme example of great graphics at the expense of mediocre gameplay.

EDIT:

To address the OP topic more directly though, all it takes is one unanimously awesome modern game to renew your faith, and truly test if your judgment on the quality of games is merely due to aging/experience, getting bored of gaming as a whole, or having been exposed to too many chitter games in a recent time frame. In 2023 that would be games like Elden Ring, Baldur's Gate 3, and Zelda. I was tempted to also mention Starfield in that grouping, but people view it as a B tier game.

The PC led graphical developments not consoles.

Crysis?

Games were measured by Nvidia releases in all honesty.

And in a way still are. But graphics keep being dumbed down for consoleplebs.

I didn't say anything about PC vs console.

The average gamer can't afford the hardware for a good gaming rig. Measured by Nvidia releases? This wasn't a PC vs console debate . I see the point you are trying to make and I agree video cards and benchmarks for gamers is what we all looked forward to as far as being dumbed down. Pc game developers don't write to the metal because again they know they can't max everything out cause few people own that $600 video card.

On a console you can write to the metal and not have to worry about please those different demographics .

This was about graphics having nothing left really to wow the gamer. Its got about as advanced as it's going to get . What's next? I'm sure there will still be minor advancements ahead. My point of the thread though was we will never get that wow factor we had when we jumped from ned snes Genesis. To n64, etc etc

I think next Gen will see some big improvements.

Unreal engine 5 is a total game changer, but still needs some time for devs to cook up some games.

Stuff like this, nearly photo realistic graphics with ue5
