Van Halen doesn't get the credit they deserve

Van Halen are a pretty forgotten band but they really were the kings of the 80s. They took the torch from Led Zeppelin and ran with it. Bands like Bon Jovi and Motley Crue and I guess later GnR and Metallica road their coat tails but VH were on top for most of the decade. The epitome of the hair band.

No DLR songs made your cut for the OP? Some of the most purely fun music ever made, I'd say. Never fails to get me in a great mood, especially in a ready-to-party context.

He was mostly 70s and they were pretty irrelevant then. He was a solo artist in the 80s and I like Van Hagar better.

VH and AC/DC are two of the only bands I know that got more popular with their second singer.

I had all their cds in the 80s and I forgot how much I liked them. Did a deep dive on youtube the other day and was shocked how many good songs they had that I forgot all about. They don't seem to get much airplay even on classic rock stations. Maybe because they still sound kinda modern.

Eddie Van Halen did the guitar solo on Beat It for free. Said it took him like 20 minutes lol. About the only real music in all of that ****'s collection too.


I think Van Halen gets appropriate props. They were great and I think most people think that, well people in music who count.

Van Halen was already one of the most successful rock bands of all time by the time Hagar joined. Every album DLR was on (the first 6 in particular) went multi-platinum. "1984" was 5x platinum within one year of release. Those early 80s tours were huge. Kind of nuts to say they were "pretty irrelevant." They were already one of the biggest, or maybe the biggest, rock band in the world before Hagar joined.

Eddie being so sensitive about his mom ended them early.

Sammy or DLR would have kept them relevant longer.

Fun fact: The original band w/out DLR (no real lead singer) were rivals with DLR's first band in the party circuit when they were all building up fans. In fact, the Van Halens hated him because he was a poser and a terrible singer. He actually approached the band and told them if he took over lead they could be massive so they begrudgingly let him join. Rest is history.

Pretty forgotten lol? Think they are widely regarded as one of the GOATs.

I think maybe you are just thinking that in all of the 80s nostalgia shows Van Halen doesn't show up in the soundtrack as much, which is kinda weird I guess.

But ya, life would be much better if we had bands like Van Halen topping the charts instead of Taylor Swift, the Rich Men North of Richmond Guy, and every rapper.

you can say a lot about van halen but i've never thought of "pretty forgotten" as a phrase to use. their 40 year old songs are on every basic/classic rock station every day across america

Also, his uncle was rich and DLR already owned his own PA system, so it would cut down on the band's expenses.

Almost.

Van Halen was "Mammoth" at the time and Eddie was singing (no Michael Anthony yet, Mark Stone was on bass). They used to regularly rent sound equipment from Diamond Dave who was fronting the Red Ball Jets at the time. More in an effort to save money than anything else, they invited Dave to be part of the band even though his vocal abilities were less than stellar. They figured his antics on stage and them not paying for rental equipment would make up for his singing.

Maybe that's what it is. Eddie and Alex never sold out to Disney/Marvel.

Another fun fact: Alex originally started on guitar and Eddie played drums. While Alex was out delivering papers, Eddie would take Alex's guitar and noodle around on it. Both of them were accomplished on piano and had solid musical knowledge.

DLR Van Halen was best. Saw them in the 80s and they were great.

Dreams was the song that got me started on them (I started listening around 1990) - I prefer Sammy Hagar, but get how iconic DLR was.

Decided I'd peaked at the fatherhood job when my oldest at age 3 requested Van Halen in the car one day (kid's 17 now, and listening to Viking Metal or something)

VH was one of my favorite bands from that era (and still to this day) and they gave birth to one of my current favorite bands (Steel Panther).

Love both Sammy and DLR eras of VH.

And was totally disgusted when Eddie fired Michael Anthony for his fat, untalented son Wolfgang, who, on talent alone wouldn’t get a spot in a jr high garage band.

Pick one.

I think they are decent but you can't turn on a rock radio station without hearing a Van Halen song once an hour.
