The sales world is insane

I’ve made 51k in the first 6 months in my first sales job, at 24yo. Obviously the goal is 100k or more at the year mark. Basically working 4-5 hours a day and sometimes a couple hours on Saturday.

Only me and one other guy on my team are consistently hitting the sales targets. The other 18 people on the team struggle to sell 1/5 of what me and that guy are selling.

I had 3 sales today, and some people on the team haven’t had one sale all month. Granted, we are in one of the toughest markets.

I’ve seen my coworkers pitches and some of them are even better than mine. But it seems like sales skill is something that can’t be taught. Some people have it, most don’t.

If it’s something you’re good at, it’s like printing money. This month could be my best month by far if I keep going at the rate I am.

I didn't really start giving a chit about my looks until I started doing in-person sales. Now I work out with a personal trainer 4x per week and do a ton of cardio. Also had a hair transplant and get a haircut every 2-3 weeks. Wear a dry cleaned shirt and pants to every meeting, even if it's 90 degrees outside. If I were bald and fat and unhealthy looking, I'd still get sales, but probably not a ton of new business. My annual budget on my appearance is probably like $10k. Whenever I meet an older person in person, they instantly trust me. Start talking to me like I'm an old friend or something.

I'm much better at sales over the phone. In person I'm kind of autistic. But I look sharp as hell and know what I'm talking about, which gets me to the place I want to be.

Has been kind of a rough last 12 months, but I'll probably have $150k in commissions between now and the end of the year.

I hate "sales" people. Most are an unnecessary expense that makes the end product/service more expensive.

If the good or service has value, people will consume it no sales pitch required. If a company has to pay people to talk low IQ people into buying, I would interpret that as the market saying your product or service is sub par.

I definitely need to start going to the dry cleaners. Mirin 150k commissions in 3 1/2 months.

I’m in d2d, it’s brutal but the money is great for a first sales job. 40k salary + uncapped commissions. And I meet some pretty interesting people, lol.

Yeah, I'd be terrible at door to door. I guess once you have a schtick down it's probably pretty easy, but I'm not great at small talk(much better at working established relatipnships once I know about a person's buying habits, and guiding them through some high level projects).

At this point, I'd almost call myself more of a consultant than a salesman, because the sales part is pretty basic and I already know someone is going to buy before I even offer it to them.

i like b2b sales people sometimes. they work for the vendor which supplies my company the things i need, and they can help me choose which product i need depending on how much i want to spend and what im using it for.

they're not trying to do anything flashy; they're like a waiter or valet in that they serve me and i pay them

All the good sales reps I’ve known usually transition into account management, business development management or relationship management (still sales roles without being as sleazy) after a couple years even if the bonuses are less than the sales rep commission.

Yeah, most B2B sales guys just make the process a lot easier. I also hate people who try to sell me things I don't need. Most B2B guys could also be called "Account Managers" because they're not doing a lot of actual selling. They just know the products.

It’s pretty tough honestly, they say if you can do d2d you can do any kind of sales. I’ve found what works for me though, and have been able to produce consistent results month to month.

I want to get into a role like you have eventually. Do you have a degree?

Yeah, I have a social science science degree from one of the top universities in the US. It doesn't have anything to do with my current position. I'm completely self-taught in my current position, which seems kinda crazy because I'm walking people through projects that are like $5-10M in many cases and have no formal training or much work experience in these areas. Just kinda faked it until I got enough repetititons with my clients until I actually learned it.

I sold to a couple people in software/tech sales. One of them was a 9/10 MILF and she is head of sales at her company. She gave me her card and said I could reach out anytime.

Yup

Used to work in sales for a bit, one of the top sellers told me "the trick is to never mention the price to the customer". And our job we were cold selling different products to existing clients, so its not like they knew the price.

I work for a multi billion dollar company with tens of millions of customers. They don’t need sales people, but the sales people have the best deals available so you’d be smart to hear them out. I offer prices literally half of what the the standard customer is paying.

In all seriousness Sales is pretty much the best job you can do if you are good at it. It's the only type of job when you're not an owner, where your earnings is unlimited through unlimited commission. But because of that, it incentivises the worse behaviour, as for many the only thing that matters is getting the sale. Some companies are also set up where you dont need to care about existing client relationships, so you get the sale, and then when the client is unhappy about being lied to, the complaint goes to a different area.

I'm in sales and its allowed me to have a great life. Closest thing to owning a business without having to deal with every aspect of it.

If you ever decide to change employers, try to shoot for one where you get a % of the contract/sale price on big ticket items. This is where the real money is made. Also industries where you build your own book of continuing business, either B2B or B2C will pay off big in the long run. This can be anything from jewelry, cars, insurance, construction equipment, medical device, etc.

The highest paid sales guy I've ever met in my life sold commercial air conditioners. He cleared $900k in 2021

Yeah, I would hate it (I'm sure there's probably some jobs that aren't bad though like higher level B2B) - but I do sort of envy those who have the personality for and excel at it. There certainly is big money to be made in that field.
