When you blackout your brain is failing to create long term memory
That means you live in the creation of long term memory, thats your reality. Lesser animals that don't have the ability to create long term memory are just robots in the wild.

They're not robots but I see what you mean, OP.
The real question is the what constitutes the difference between simple cognition and complex cognition? There's an infinite gulf between life and robotics, because simple animals do elicit genuine adaptive behaviour and learn from the past to anticipate the future. They have memory but it's an embodied memory in the form of habits and dispositions, and it's always prompted by dynamical engagement with the environment.
But complex animals like us, we can disengage from the world and span time by creating novel mental objects, like rotating a shape in our heads, or forming a plan, or have beliefs with propositional content.
Why can we do this? What is the secret sauce that makes this possible? (I wrote a thesis chapter on this, btw, on how the dynamical systems approach to cognition can tackle this conundrum).

Neurons in a petri dish playing pong is a good example how we can have brains but still be robots. Thats how neurons work.
