As someone who went through a family inheritance ordeal, I would recommend just lawyering up from the get go and not talking to them about it. Avoid a lawyer that suggests talking to them because it would be nicer or cheaper. Just do it all through the lawyer. Avoid the stress and the games, the emails and the arguments. Anyway that's my personal take if I could do it again.

The amount was for peanuts, it's not like it was a nice inheritance with several millions, and the avoiding that stress would have been worth much more than a couple thousand or even few ten thousands for a lawyer.

It’s $250,000 of an inheritance so I didn’t think it was worth an attorney since my Dad may go through the money anyways with a caregiver. His health isn’t they great.

My aunt just wrote me on my other email and said that she never wants to hear from me again so I can stop managing my Dad’s finances and she and my uncle will take over.

Now it’s time to lawyer up as I don’t know if they’ll try to swindle him.

Halp?

Who should pay for this attorney? It's only $250,000 in my Dad's trust. He may need the money for a caregiver so it may get wiped out, or he could pass away tomorrow? He's in his 80s.

What I'm concerned about is that they will swindle his money to them and then he'll end up homeless

My mother divorced my dad when I was very young and has no wealth.
My dad re-married and has a new family. We dont talk.

Never going to see a dime from them.

My in-laws have suggested they were leaving something to us before, 10+ years ago, but they have been becoming increasingly distant and I have very little expectation they will.
They've also been showing clear favoritism to their other children (not my wife), even discussing plans to visit one of them in another state (again), (costly), when they haven't bothered visiting us in many years.

The suggestion to get legal help sounds like a good idea in your situation Dusty.

I'm so sorry about your situation. That sounds awful. But family is what family is.

I really don't care about receiving the money as I'd rather my Dad have it for his care--I just worry they are going to swindle his money and he'll end up trying to live on Social Security. Why would my aunt go in for the kill when my Mom became incapacitated? My Mom was a very strong woman and she would be upset if she knew how much my Aunt was involved in their financial affairs.
