Greg Maddox -- most impressive athlete ever?

dude was like 5'11 170lbs.

not fast, no muscle tone, looked like he could walk out of any office in America.

but for *15 straight* years between 1988 and 2002 he was a super dominant pitcher that could field the best at his position (13 straight gold gloves during this time) and even hit pretty good for a pitcher. his worst season during these 15 years was 19-9 with a 3.57 era.

keep in mind the dude was throwing to juiced hitters for all of these years

Gretzky, and its not even close. Same build, but looked bigger due to pads, and his stats will never be touched.

It was probably Muggsy Bogues when you really think about it. Imagine being 5'3'' in the NBA and managing to have a 14 year career. The sheer disadvantage he was at was insane.

ive said before and people don't take it seriously. more impressive than mj considering the disadvantage of being shorter than the average woman. an nba starter in the 90s at 5'3 with dominant 7 foot bigs all over damn. that's like a 175 lb dude fighting for the heavyweight championship in modern boxing

Its funny how people get saddled with the "great athlete" label, but they suck at everything but their sport...DK Metcalf for example struck out playing slow pitch soft ball.

"Great athlete" is a title reserved for those whose ability translates most broadly over the various physical capabilities of the human body.

Hard to gauge that though because so few athletes attempt multiple sports. they probably know being their best at one sports means more money than simply competing in multiple sports. Perhaps Bo Jackson in 1989 is the closest in the modern era...nearly 1000 rushing yards and mlb all star

Bo is a good choice...Herschel Walker was a multi-faceted athlete, Wilt Chamberlain was as well.

Muggsy Bogues admitted in a documentary about himself that MJ stood back and said "shoot it you fkn midget". Proceeded to throw up a brick and was never mentally the same again. Brutal.

there's pros and cons. Babe also didn't face pitchers who throw 97 mph. An elite fastball in his time was probably mid to upper 80s. I doubt guys had the vicious off speed stuff they have now either- you have pitchers who throw 92 mph sliders and changeups


but he would have been fantastic in any era. He had supreme hand eye coordination mixed with tremendous genetic strength/power. Everybody only talks about his power but he consistently hit .340 to .360+

bonds hit 46 homeruns in 1993 in only 530 at bats. Ruth avged about 12 at bats per homerun. Very similar numbers


Bonds faced much much much tougher competition. I'd say bonds is the closest to the modern reincarnation of babe ruth
