Anxiety - Fear of Flying
Early last year I accepted a promotion that requires 1 week of travel a year. It's an annual conference within the State that brings all of the people in my field together. My problem is I have an irrational fear of flying. I've never in my life enjoyed flying and have always had a fear of it, but the older I get the worse it gets. The last time I was on a plane was roughly 8 years ago, this trip in 2 weeks will be the first in a long time.
For my last trip, I went to my primary Dr and at the time he prescribed me ******, which worked VERY well. I met with my new primary Dr this week and he prescribed me ****** (Lorazepam). Has anyone taken this for anxiety? Did it work for you?
I have no plans on taking this long term and it will be to get me to/from my trip.
Anyone else deal with this? How do you handle it?

flying has always been fear inducing but really i think its just the subconscious mind/ego copeing for the relinquishing of control that occurs during air travel
i just always tell myself that i'm not lucky enough to die on airplane and that seems to always work lol

I love flying I used to do it all the time. Being in Sandusky’s basement which is obviously in a democrat area
I haven’t got the opportunity to do it much because you know?
They hate military service if it costs them donor money…
Those feels tho as the plane starts to shake right as you begin to hit flight from the runway?

I can strongly relate. I am petrified of flying and it has gotten worse with exposure, not better. I’ve flown about a dozen times over the past 4 years. Most recently in December 2021 and I refuse to do so again.
I just can’t shake the feeling of being crammed in a narrow tube and losing all control. I’ve read countless articles on the physics and safety of aviation. I understand it is by far the safest form of travel, statistically. I have talked to a pilot personally who reassured me. It didn’t help at all. Every time we take off that feeling of weightlessness, which I describe as like falling out of the sky, freaks me the fuk out man. I had a panic attack on the plane last time, would’ve ran off if I could srs. To make matters worse, we flew into a windstorm and hit some nasty turbulence before landing and had to circle the airport. My whole body was shaking and my mind ignoring all logic for the ridiculous thought that we were going to crash and die. The people sitting around me probably thought I was a fkin basket case.
I know I sound like a bitch but it’s the honest truth. I wish I had some advice. Maybe you’ll be able to cope through exposure and reassurance. Personally I plan to drive or take Amtrak whenever I travel from now on. Saving time is not worth the stress/anxiety.

Idk why I’ve always thought dying in an airplane crash wouldn’t be a bad way to go. The thought of having a minute or two to reflect before death seems appealing.

I talked to some other brahs who had a fear of flying who’d take a shot of liquor before takeoff. Alcohol is not my think but it seemed to work. Alternatively, you said the conference is in state. Not sure where you are but is driving an option, even if a hassle?

I would actually suggest to go down the medication route like OPs doctor in cases where you can't really avoid flying, basically v@alium/xannies for use only when flying. You basically can't have a panic attack on that stuff.

This used to be me. Not anymore. I like flying now.
Tips:
- If you can possibly afford first class, book it. Sitting in the front really helped me. Plus you get all the drinks you need and better service. And more room to sleep.
- Download something good to watch on an iPad -- download a few things. I just watched Swamp Kings downloaded from Netflix and the flight I took the other day went by really fast.
- I take zinc and magnesium, have a few drinks, and I'm good.
Remember this: You have better odds of winning the lottery than being involved in a plane crash. Commercial air travel is one of the safest forms of transportation, and modern aircraft are designed with multiple safety features and redundancies to minimize the risk of accidents.
On average, there are tens of thousands of flights taking off from airports across the United States each day. How many crash? None.

Driving isn’t an option for me since dirty cops took my license and car interfering with ns helping dea agents attack on healthcare
But my flight leaves for Florida the 10th
Let me know if any ladies want to drive me
If not I’m going to bus to ambridge and Uber or Lyft from there to the airport?
You hear me Lyft? Pay attention… all these people all across the world are counting on you. Be in ambridge, on the 10th early evening. To drive me across the bridge to the airport
I’ll buy the ticket thru app but you have to be there
Can I tell you something future Lyft driver bre I’ve not even met yet? When I hear your voice I know I’m finally free…
I’ll be in solid dhs hands, when I get to the airport and for that dept of homeland security? We thank you
As people across the world wait with baited breathe
Haha
I know sometimes I like to fool around at work Lyft driver bres

I know it's easier said than done, and a lot of people have a fear of flying. I always tell them you're more likely to die driving to the airport than dying on your flight.
Think about it how many passenger flights are in the air right now in the world.....Thousands...how many are you going to hear tomorrow crashed...probably none. It's very safe...the amount of testing, and that goes into the safety features in each plane is extensive.
I mean I probably wouldn't recommend this, because you might start getting dependent on it, but might as well get drunk lol.

Not sure, OP. Have you ever heard the story of Mr Play-it-safe? He was afraid to fly. He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye. He waited his whole damn life to take that flight, and as the plane crashed down, he thought "well, isn't this nice?"

Here’s a fact that helped me.
There has not been a fatal accident in United States commercial flying in 14 years.
Each day approximately 28,000 commercial flights are taken daily. Imagine this in your head, 28 THOUSAND flights take off and land every single day for the past 14 years without issue.
That is insane levels safety

The more you do it, the easier it gets man. Your brain will adjust to a place of comfort. I promise. In the mean time, enjoy the insanely intense primitive desire to not die with dignity on the inside. It may suck for a bit, but you will survive it. I promise you can do it.

Statistically speaking, the likelihood of being in a fatal crash is irrelevant. Regardless of how much time has passed since the last one.

I refuse to ever get on an airplane, not only because of my fear of flying but also because of the confusion that comes with traveling in terms of layovers, luggage, navigating airports, etc.

You know what's better than meds? Knowledge and information. Knowledge is power when it comes to flight fears.
Flying is the safest form of travel. You have a 1 in 11 million chance of being in a plane crash, and even then, you have a 95% chance of surviving it. So if you get into a crash, go out and buy a lottery ticket! You can hit those astronomical odds!
How come you don't have the same fear of driving? If you survive the drive to the airport, the most dangerous part of the trip is already over. The main thing that makes plane travel so safe is the ridiculous amount of redundancy built into the whole system.
The airframe is designed withstand turbulence many times greater than anything a plane would realistically fly into (turbulence is basically a pothole on the road and pilots aren't scared of it). There's a whole constitution on it which people in the field have to know and it rigorously dictates the requirements of everyone involved on a flight from engineers to pilots to stewardesses. More examples of redundancy:
Engine fails? Other engine compensates.
Both engines fail? Plane can glide for enough time to find an emergency airport. Planes want to glide and fly. It's what they do.
Advanced weather systems informing the pilot of where bad weather is and how to avoid it.
Every instrument has multiple backups in case of failure, like GPS etc.
There's an entire department and company of people on the ground who are monitoring your flight and where are all the other planes are, and constantly communicating with everyone in the air and guiding them where to go.
And even then, think of how regular-ass flying is around the world. I landed back from Europe around a month ago. How many flights took off and landed around the world with absolutely no problems? Around 4-5 million.
When it comes to statistics V your anxiety, statistics wins every time.

Back off, Warchild.
Seriously.
