Get well soon Al.
Get well soon Al.
I'd like to think it was just the stress of being on the road, the poor eating usually associated with constant travel, and inadequate rest.
Back off, Warchild.
Seriously.

Have you compared a NAM against a Kemper, Tonex, or Cortex?
I'm feeding it previously recorded dry input and am impressed so far. Especially for free.

Profiling =/= modelling
One of them is free to experiment and determine if profiling can work for you.

but yeah, as far as I'm aware all the processing is done in the unit (in my case kemper), so it saves your PC having to process it. when u use plugins etc I guess you just have to need a high quality audio interface and a nice fast computer?

My personal use case is playing and recording at home, exclusively. I absolutely love my tube amp! To make things practical, I run it to a reactive load with IR loading capability (Two Notes CaptorX). It's awesome!
But...
It's an incredible time to be a guitarist. Modelling and profiling are facilitating great sounds at silent room levels - headphones only!
Now that I have a bit more time and a dedicated set up, I've become curious about other tones. So GAS kicks in.
I've been shopping and looking at Fractal, Helix, Tonex, Kemper, Quad Cortex, and even the Strymon Iridium to expand my pallet. (I have a Spark mini for practicing around the house and outside).
I heard about NAM a while back but was feeling lazy about getting things set up. Now that I'm ready to pull the trigger on something, I decided to give the free solution a try and compiled the plug in and an IR loader today.
I already have a decent interface (Scarlett 18i20, 2nd gen), a reamp box (Radial JCR), and a decent processor (AMD 3800x) with a training-capable GPU (RTX 2060).
For me, the opportunity to experiment with profiling with no additional financial investment is pretty awesome!
The real-time latency is really low on my system, I can mess around with any amp I can think of.
With the reamp set-up I can use my pedalboard without issue.
Long story long - I'm blown away by what's available for free!

I'm confused AF by all of this as well and much more than you, when I last played all my effects were built into my steady-state and the only pedals I had were a reverb and my Vox wah. But I foresee a future where the biggest names are doing huge gigs 100% digitally.
Back off, Warchild.

Is the difference worth thousands of dollars to try?
I've heard a lot of people say the Archetype plugins from Neural sound better right out of the gate than the Quad Cortex. As long as your audio interface is low latency you'll be fine with software.
I liken this to hardware vs. soft synths, outboard racks vs. plugins, IRs vs. real cabs with expensive mics... list goes on. Of course we'd all love to have a room full of gear. It sounds better, looks great, and you can turn physical controls. But you're shelling out thousands for that old gear not to mention the cost to maintain it when it stops working.
Take it a step further and look at a studio console vs. "in the box." Of course if money was no object we'd all want a room with an old Neve or SSL desk, Pultec EQs, tube compressors, racks of vintage gear, old synths, Neumann mics, etc. and an engineer on hand but who can afford it?You have to compromise somewhere.

I still use my old Behringer Vamp2 and the Spark Mini has absolutely led to me playing more.
I love the feel and sound of my tube amp and it's really versatile (Mesa MkIV running EL34 and 6L6) together will my set of pedals. That's still my go to.
But, for experimenting - NAM is an awesome tool to have in the toolbox, imo

Now these posts will likely be deleted, lol.
I never said anything other than I studied abstruse jazz theory and incorporated it into my playing. I actually passed the music theory test ITT, even after my request for musical context was declined. Dudes just making chit up.
I think he's just another right-wing wing nut who lives in perpetual anger and needs to invent evil intentions, false motives and farcical accusations where they just simply don't exist. But yesterday the guy who saw my PhD transcript rolled up and said he'd received it and silenced the haters in one fell swoop. It was glorious.
Someone explain why I can't talk guitar in here because I don't own one ATM, and I'll accept it.

For someone on a budget digital is a no brainer. It will get you a lot closer to the tones you're hearing in the music you like than anything else.

I haven't pretend to be on any level I'm not. I've said literally over a dozen times I don't own a guitar ATM, the last time I was recorded playing was year 10 music twenty years ago before smartphones etc. and I have no idea where the footage is.
LogicalLifts literally posted the transcript and confirmed it was mine. He said it didn't show the award of the degree but that's because he isn't familiar with academic transcripts and forgot that I never claimed I had a PhD. Dude shut the haters up in an instant.
Take your meds dude, you're losing it. I'll come back in the morning and find all of this deleted, too, lol.
