I saw her in concert in 2015 before her tickets were insane and it was mostly because I wanted a good female celebrity role model for my daughter. Miley Cyrus--das not it. I also took her to see Selena Gomez. A lot of other Moms were at the Taylor Swift concert with their daughters.

But I find her songs kind of boring and yes, she's more average looking than Shakira, J Lo or Rihanna.

I don't understand thousands for her concerts. I'd rather travel with that kind of money.

I'd argue that her looks are an asset because she's above average, but not so far above that most women can't relate. Women can identify better with someone that is pretty and has relationship struggles, but isn't necessarily movie star gorgeous or super artsy.

Another factor is that she started when she was fairly young and has a legion of fans that has literally grown up with her. She has matured as an artist and her fanbase is like a snowball that keeps growing because rather than shedding fans through the years, her creative output is in lock-step with the tastes of her followers.

Lastly, she has more business savvy than most pop stars. Swifties like the girlboss thing because they can identify with that, at least in an aspirational way. Now, I don't think her music or performances are anything super special and I sure as hell can't relate to her subject matter, but I can see why a certain large, loyal demographic eats that up. It also happens to be the demo that tends to spend the most on concerts and music in general. Despite her parents literally buying a controlling stake in a record label, she has solid enough music and is smart with her public image and business dealings, ergo she's super successful. However, I still cringe when people try to compare her to, say, Michael Jackson.
