Fuark. That's the average cost to own/use a car in the USA.

Pretty brutal tbh.

Brb, driving 25 miles. Brb, paying $18.25 for the privilege.

Brb, taking a small 250 mile road trip. Brb, paying $182.50 to do so.

There's no way that's accurate. Most sedans are getting 30-40 mpg, unless that factors in insurance, maintenance, etc. (Super Ded fkn Srs)

it for sure factors in all that stuff. its why you or your business gets to write off 65.5 cents for every mile you drive.

Yes, that factors in everything. Insurance, purchase price of the vehicle, upkeep, interest on the loan, etc.

Yeah, once you count not only gas, but wear and tear and depreciation it's no joke.

I was driving 58 miles each way to work. I took a WFH job where I took a slight paycut but it just seems like I have more money.

I think that sounds about right for a new Ford F150. Uber Drivers and the 10 year old base model Prius they just bought with a recently replaced oem hybrid battery have like an 18 cent per mile operating cost.

Seems a bit high even accounting for modern car cost...

Probably closer to 65 ish per mile for the first 5 years.

With 40-45 being more typical in the 5-10 year zone.

So I keep track of how much I pay for gas in a spreadsheet for this very purpose.

I paid 33k including tax in 2016 for my car
Pay about 100 a month for insurance * 96 months
Approximately 18000$ in gas during that time
About another 5k for maintenance items

I’m at roughly 73c per mile (ded fkn srs).

Feels bad man

Same car today with 90k more on it is only marginally less, just fukin lol.

I paid cash on this thing, so fortunately didn’t have to factor in interest payments because that really would have sent me closer to 80c/mile.

its a big factor in the reason I chose to move to a small one town island in hawaii....no car needed unless you really want one....everything I need is within a 20 min walk.

I'm still surprised how many people drive here....like for real its kinda hilarious...I get that you want to go to the beach sometimes, but we really need a small public system here or just let everyone drive golf carts around...I don't think we have more than 50 miles of paved road.

but not needing a car saves so much money and its nice to walk, granted its alway78f and nice weather, not everyone can do that.

carcelling is absolute waste of time unless racing on track. even if you buy a ferrari with mileage of 8-12 each mile costs exponentially more in depreciation if you ever sell.

I think that's for an average new vehicle. The biggest piece of the cost is depreciation. They also figure you don't do any of your own maintenance. If you're driving a new Highlander that you're financing it's probably $1.50 per mile. If you're driving a paid off 10 yr old RAV4 and you do your own maintenance it's probably 30-35 cents a mile. The older car's insurance is lower, the taxes on it are cheaper, depreciation is marginal compared to the newer vehicle, etc.

Depreciation really is a killer.

I told myself I'd get a prius for years but couldn't bring myself to do it. I'm not in the market for a vehicle any time soon but the latest generation Prius will probably be it when I'm ready to buy. 190 hp, 57 mpg, doesn't look goofy.
