Thread: Back in the days of the 60-70 hour work week…did people think it was normal?

Back in the days of the 60-70 hour work week…did people think it was normal?

Thinking back a couple hundred years ago

Apparently people worked 10-12 hours a day, 6 days a week

Obviously all those people are long dead so we’ll never *really* know

But how would that conversation have gone?

“Well honey, I’m off to work, see you and the 8 kids in around 12 hours.

Going to be a busy day - Bunch of guys died yesterday when the furnace exploded, hope I don’t get stuck with overtime lol!”

When I did construction, I would worked 12s 7 days a week. That sh!t fukking blows, you have zero time to take proper care of yourself and you just want to maximize your free time with sleep and stuff your face with whatever food you can find. I made so much money however, but wouldn't recommend that lifestyle to anyone. (Super Ded fkn Srs)

you have to consider that before the industrial revolution most people had to be self sufficient which is 12-15 hrs a day 7 days a week

This is false. People worked less than they do now.

Really, the whole 60-70 hour work week was a product of the industrial revolution and factories. Peasants worked like 20-30 hours a week. We work a lot become we make tons of endless crap. People in the past didn't do that. Only people who worked crazy hours were slaves

I did 80+ hours a week for 20+ years.
Screw nature; my body will do what I DAMN WELL tell it to do!

The only dangerous thing about an exercise is the person doing it.

They had the technology to rebuild me. They made me better, stronger, faster......

they only worked a few days a week for not even 8 hours. barely worked during the winter too.

People didn't know any better.

When I go to Colombia, I see the same guys working in their exact same spots on the beach from like 9AM to 6PM 7 days per week. I've even gone back many times over many years, and they still remember me. Hustling drinks, selling Pepsi or whatever else you want them to get you. There's actually a pretty special charm to it.

A couple hundred years ago most people worked at home on their farm. Long hours though

Industrial revolution time sucked for men. Women basically raised the kids on their own.

not as bad as it was before, life gets better and better.
back in the day people had to forage for berrys and kill deer all day just to survive in leather/cloth clothes, then go home and sleep in some tent or leaf hut.
now you can "work" 8 hrs a day, m-f while spending most of your time on your phone or the internet not doing chit, come home to your big tv, order a bucket of chicken, and sleep on your comfy mattress...

Yes… hence the reference in the OP to “a couple of hundred years ago”

Do you think they were OK with it? Or were they like “damn grandpa only worked like 5 days a week and he was on a dairy farm so the chances of him dying in an industrial accident were basically zero!”

Yeah it sucked but you also have to consider it’s not like they had a nice air conditioned home to go to with vidyagames and tv and ****. They lived in a hot/cold sheit box with 15 other people with nothing to do, except go drink booze

What about if literally everyone was working the same hours? Would that change or view or would you still think it sucked donkeys balls?
