Matt Gaetz introduces motion to vacate against House Speaker Kevin McCarthy

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., has followed through on his renewed threat to introduce a motion to vacate against House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Gaetz, a frequent McCarthy critic, introduced the motion Monday evening on the House floor.

"Mr. Speaker, pursuant to clause two A1 of Rule nine, I rise to give notice of my intent to raise a question of the privileges of House," Gaetz said. "Declaring the office Speaker of the House of Representatives to be vacant. Resolved that the office of Speaker of the House Representatives is hereby declared to be vacant."

Gaetz's move will force the House to take a vote on whether to keep McCarthy as speaker within two legislative days.

There are a number of members undecided on how they would vote on such a measure, but it's likely McCarthy will need at least some Democrat votes to keep his job. Democrats could be in a position to try and extract concessions from McCarthy for their votes.

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., told Fox News following Gaetz's move that he believes a motion to vacate at this time is "a bad idea." Additionally, Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., told Fox he was undecided.

McCarthy reacted to the motion with a post on X. "Bring it on," he simply said.

If it fails McCarthy would be relatively free to start ignoring the freedom caucus and govern more from the middle...perhaps even bipartisan.

But if he loses then idk who is going to replace him. Who would even want that job under such conditions?

NEW: House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told his conference this morning in their closed door huddle that he will bring the motion to vacate today, in the first vote series— which means the earliest it could come is around 1:30pm, two GOP lawmakers tell me.

While I’m not all in on Gaetz.. where other politicians have had the right bark but it proved to be all for show (trey gowdy and others), gaetz seems to actually believe it and follows through.

We need more antiestablishment folks in the house and senate. We need fewer McCarthys.

Might be a good opportunity to elevate one of Trump’s house allies, someone like Stefanik or Wesley Hunt, who would be formidable VP candidates next year but lack the experience to qualify as the nation’s #2. Speakership is a huge step up from being just a representative.

Trump could endorse a handful of people then…

Unfortunately, if you want to play in the swamp, you’ll need swamp creatures to go along with you. If there was a massive pool of antiestablishment folks to pull from, I’m sure he would. That’s just not reality. A rino, at least from a voting standpoint, remains better than a dem (barely).

That vote hasn't happened yet. This is the vote to table (set aside) the motion to remove McCarthy. All the Democrats voted No (meaning they WANT to proceed with a vote on removing McCarthy) as well as some Republicans. So there WILL be a vote on removing McCarthy coming up
