Now that you've got some gear for recording you should try the DI thing he talks about (I edited my post). I remember talking to Swim about this years ago. You record the dry signal from the guitar which gives you options "reamping" later. You could send it back through real amps and record those, Axe-FX, plugins... until you dial in the perfect sound for a mix.

Nice. I've been thinking more about it and maybe it's not even Db I'm thinking of, it's actually just the shape of the key signature in the keyboard. I think it applies more with modes of the melodic minor since they're not used starting from the 1st degree as much. For instance I can't remember the last time I used the shape of C# melodic minor over a C# min maj chord, I associate it way more with C altered.

This has always been one of the reasons I'd never picked up guitar, there's so many choices to play exactly the same thing it's intimidating. I imagine once you get used to it that becomes a feature and not a bug, but damn.

FWIW the downside IMO of the guitar on that front is that it can be easy to fall into the habit of staying in the same box shape for a particular scale or mode that you like to use. Like you said, the keyboard is linear so with any one scale you get all the modes "for free" but the guitar has distinctive box shapes for the scales.

I know the standard pentatonic shape has gotten many a guitarist locked into a habit, but even with pentatonic there are different shapes you can play in for more versatility, like diagonally rather than up and down.

But if you can do that you really stand out more as a player, e.g Friedman chitting over Kirk Hammett when compared amongst serious guitarists (Hammett is pentatonic + tremolo picking + wah)
Back off, Warchild.

Seriously.

I'm still in nostalgia mode. I'll tell you what was better back then. Guitarists would randomly appear on talk shows, morning shows, etc. with an electric guitar playing instrumental music.

Vai chewing gum playing the swirl 7 string at the peak of his fame. Satriani trying hard to look like he flew in from Seattle. Grunge took a wrecking ball to this stuff. It was suddenly not cool to have chops.

If reviews are anything to go by their Tone Master amps are selling well so they might as well cash in. The price is stupidly high but they must have a lot of faith in their marketing and ability to convince people only Fender knows how to accurately model Fender amps.

For that kind of money I'd buy Fractal so I'm getting the dog's bollocks in effects too.

Sure. Everything is nicely integrated.

I'm surprised Cliff hasn't made a pedlaboard friendly multi FX unit at a lower price point for those of us who just want Fractal's effects. Fractal could really hurt Strymon if they wanted to. FM3 just for that purpose is tempting.

You know I've been banging on about this in here for years but I still think using tubes for preamp tones is the way to go if you can justify it. It's the power amp where the pain in the arse is. I'm still running the same 3 tubes in my tube pedal 8 years on. Can plug it in anywhere in the world and it's always 12VDC. I did the FRFR thing for a few years and last year went back to a real cabinet. I'm using modeling just for the Fender tone stack and power amp — IRs are disabled — because that's what my pedals were designed to go into. I've considered getting a Princeton or a Deluxe Reverb just to have the real thing but that'd be a waste of a perfectly good 1x12 Fender cabinet which is made of pine instead of shtty particle board or whatever Fender normally uses.

Cliffs: I like using analog as much as possible and modeling where it's convenient. For recording I can use a combination of real mics on 1x12 + IRs on the CAB M or in software.

isn't it wild how adam jones from Tool will use a loop pedal for 1 bar and then turn it off again.

love that attention to detail

There's a big difference between EL34 and 6L6 but at lower volumes those tubes aren't doing much other than filtering. Pushing them is where the magic happens.

I only need 3 tones. Clean. Low gain, crunchy. Bit more gain with a softer attack, think Holdsworth. Maybe I don't know what I'm missing but I don't feel like I'm missing out by not having 100s of amp models to play with. A pedal that really surprised me was the old Bogner Ecstasy Blue. That thing absolutely responds like an amp. I've been using that for low gain.

Watched the Leon Todd video on the Fender Tone Master Pro. User interface looks idiot proof. Big tick there. However it's nowhere near as flexible as the Fractal stuff, especially with routing. Effects won't touch it either.

I can see working pros loving it.

The nerd in me would love an FM3. However the analog delay + Strymon DIG combo I've got going for lead tones is getting the job done but I'd love to go balls deep in that Fractal plex delay and see what's possible. This all goes back to what JLC said earlier. There's never been a better time to play with all the options we have available. There's only one caveat — used gear. The prices are stupid. And every time one of those Youtubers dusts off some old piece of gear and makes a video about it the prices soar even higher.

I rarely sell because I always find a use for stuff later. The FM3 is a no brainer because I could still use all the analog gear I'm using now only with unlimited effects. No downsides at all.

I reckon that Fender will sell like hotcakes. All the old farts on the fence with their tube amps and pedalboards can just sell gear to pay for it. They passed on the Strymon Iridium and similar products because they probably seemed like a gimmick but now that Fender has gone in they'll reconsider.

I know this is yet another Youtuber on the payroll but look at the ease with which she could convince the demographic I'm talking about to buy this thing. It sells itself. Cover band guitarists can just set up presets for each song on their set list and just jump to the next preset before each song. You watch this thing sell even with the Fractal price tag.

Not to beat a dead horse, but the criticism is they claim you said, "I've studied the most abstruse elements of jazz theory, and believe me it gets complex."

If you said that, which I can't recall exactly but it does sound pretty close, then a 20-year gap wouldn't matter because no abstruse jazz theory has been discussed in this thread. If you want abstruse pick up A Chromatic Approach to Jazz Harmony and Melody by Liebman.

Sorry bro, but it is sound. Both a ii-V-I and a backdoor ii-V-I start on a minor chord, but when you see Dmi7 G7 Cma7 you see it as complete and know immediately that the Dmi7 is a ii chord with no context needed.

The reason why Dmi7 G7 Ama7 doesn't similarly immediately jump out to you is because you were not familiar with the backdoor. His point was that both progressions are common in standards and should be vanilla to those steeped in the abstruse.

That made me laugh out loud for real.

You know whose tone from that era of shredders I liked and who rarely gets mentioned these days... Michael Lee Firkins. His phrasing was awesome.
