basically they're making the teachers learn a hundred ways of teaching a single thing.
I'm not exactly sure whether they then have to teach the students those 100 different ways or not.

the issue is that they no longer just have kids practice and memorize math

you and I look at 7 x 9 = 63 simply because we memorized it


they now try and teach them weird conceptual methods and go away from rote memorization and practice which is very harmful in my opinion. sure, it doesnt provide a deep framework for theoretical mathematics, but 99% of kids are never going to touch that in their careers. they need to be able to do math problems quickly in their head and its FINE to memorize.


the irony, is the brilliant math geniuses figure out the conceptual theory by themselves. they dont need all this common core framework pushed on them.

meanwhile kids in asia memorize multiplication tables to like 25 and other things and its no wonder they can spit out perfect SAT math scores in their sleep since the white americans are fumbling around taking forever to do the problems wasting time on the test

I make sure my kids are at least two grades ahead in math by teaching them stuff at home. Plus all sorts of tricks that make things easier because you never know what technique is going to resonate with them. Don't trust teachers to get your kids ahead.

I teach my kids spatial concepts for math, like the pic in op, because it directly relates to concepts in calculus....and everything else. Its still good to memorize as well.

Lets be real. They learned math from their home projects more than in school. Legos are great for demonstrating a lot of these concepts, just like in op pic. That being said, I'd like to see a mix of old and new school.

I don't think it makes much difference OP. I think it's worth a try to show kids there are different ways to do things in math, but I don't think it makes much of a difference long term. Kids who are really good at math are really good because they can intuitively see the easiest way to solve a problem. Making them solve problems in suboptimal ways is confusing and a step back for them. Kids at the bottom are often at the bottom because they don't want to put in the work to really understand the concepts and adding additional ways to solve problems doesn't really change that. Maybe it helps the kids in the middle who work hard but aren't naturally talented.

My son liked math, doing it the way everyone did it before common core. Doing it the common core way he hates it, so he's come to not like math or school in general, since common core is applied to other subjects too. Him: "It's so boring." A couple of years ago they were doing this whole 'letter land' thing to supposedly help kids with learning letters and early word recognition. I swear they did it the whole school year. They ended up scrapping the program after a couple of years because it was an utter failure, with kids worse off.

My wife recently bought some montessori books for him to work on, which in just a couple of weeks have been equal to half a school year as far as his actual learning and improving his reading. He finds it more engaging than what he does in school, so he's less bored, which has him improving right away. He does math the fast way he only gets partial credit, since he did it the fast way, not the 10 minute, dozen steps way they are trying to push on them with common core. Fukc these ghey ass systems.
