I picked up a bass the other day (got a 5 string sterling sub series with a 70W Rumble 25 bass amp for $200, not bad)

Anyhow, that was the last piece I was missing to start messing around with composing and mixing my own full band sound (less vocals). So far I am using strictly free VSTs for my guitars. I am also trialing a new MIDI editor called beat scholar, which is sweet by the way. Just haven't found a way yet to get my high quality drum samples from GGD into it.

Thoughts on the general sound/mix of the riff below? I am still learning EQ but I feel like it's spinning wheels with free guitar amp plugins. Can't EQ the drums as they're all on one track. Should I be spending any serious energy on learning to EQ, and figuring out a way to EQ each drum individually?

It's a free virtual amp in a digital audio workstation, assuming you're talking about the guitar. Fuark guess I should be springing for the paid gear.

That could definitely benefit from some better mixing and EQ, brah. But good job on getting rolling with this.

What are your thoughts on using a digital platform in this day and age, like Axe-Fx? This audiophilia side of music in 2023 still confuses the absolute crap out of me - I see Dom and Z4v4 etc talk in the guitar thread about this stuff and it's like they're speaking a second language.

But...the amount of versatility and options, and amazingly perfect tones you can get through digital make it a very worthy purchase IMO. There are some who still prefer analog and pedals and tube amps etc. but digital has it beat in terms of absurd degrees of fine tuning.

Last time I played seriously I don't even think Axe-Fx was a thing, the technology has made incredible leaps and bounds since. I'm literally like our grandmas attempting to understand a modern iPhone.

I had to google axe-fx if that helps illustrate how fresh I am to using a DAW. But I agree with the general point. Even with these crappy free virtual amps (I'm using emissary by STL tones and Roots by AMPED), it sounds way better than the $150 amp I have sitting in my office. Add to that the fact that these plug ins have a full pedalboard with overdrive, reverb, delay, noisegates, etc. AND you can record, edit, loop, etc. in the DAW and it's a no brainer. I haven't plugged into a real amp since the day I downloaded my first DAW.
