update since last time
Cicero - Selected Letters - 4/5 - There was close to 200 letters here, arranged chronologically and i enjoyed most of them, gives a real insight into Rome and makes Cicero very 'human' instead of some abstract, historical figure.
Robin Waterfield - Plato of Athens - 4/5 - The first biography of Plato for ~200 years. A biography of Plato is always going to be difficult to write, given the lack of data on his life, but this biography makes a decent attempt. The most useful insight was detail on his time in Syracuse, but i do feel the book relies heavily on some of the 'Epistles of Plato' being genuine (letters 3,7, and 8 according to Waterfield), but i don't see how one could write a full biography without some assumption of this kind.
Werner Heisenberg - Physics & Philosophy - 4.5/5 - This was great, much better than i expected. Heisenberg being an absolute prodigy and a pioneer in quantum mechanics has a lot to say about its impact on philosophy, and after reading this i am a little more sympathetic to what the Copenhagen interpretation of QM was trying to do (although i still think it's the wrong approach)

Cool to see you're reading Smolin there Zen. I ordered The Trouble with Physics last year and it sits on my bookshelf yet to be read.
I'm not a physics guy but I've become very interested in the stalling progress with physics as of late and why string theory still hangs around despite a lot of opinion that it's unfalsifiable rubbish that hasn't generated any successful predictions. There's another book on my book shelf about it too relating it to Publish or Perish Syndrome.
I like his efforts to recover a genuine understanding of time beyond the Einsteinian dismissal of temporal becoming. His idea of time being more fundamental than space is very cool.

I'm not intimately familiar with Smolins work to be honest, although i know the basics. From what i can tell in this book so far, his approach to quantum gravity seems to be some kind of synthesis of Loop quantum gravity, string theory & the holographic principle, and he states that he currently does work in the region between String theory & Loop quantum gravity. I'm only 1/8th of the way through though so i'll reserve further comment until i've read it. I also have 'einsteins unfinished revolution' sat on my shelf by Smolin to be read at some point. I haven't heard his theory of time being more fundamental than space, but it's certainly interesting - i also suppose, to me what is really meant by 'time' matters when we ask whether time is fundamental. For example, Carlo rovelli in his 'thermal time' ideas seems to claim to be doing away with time, but what he's actually doing is losing time as an independent variable in the schrodinger equation, but instead tracking 'change' by relations; to me this is almost semantic since in some sense time IS change (even though technically its not fundamental anymore, since its not an independent variable), but this area of physics is difficult to talk about as i'm sure you're aware, because Western language is completely built on temporal terms. From the direction research seems to be going in, i wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that neither space, nor time are fundamental, and quantum gravity certainly at leastseemslike it will show us how space emerges from underlying principles. As far as i can tell, of the main research directions (many worlds, string theory, holographic principle, loop quantum gravity) only String theory appears to treat space as fundamental, and String theory is looking more and more like a mathematical tool rather than a good theory for the universe.
Honestly no idea if we'll solve quantum gravity soon, but Smolin seems very optimistic thus far.

The winningest sports bettor of all time writes his life story from birth to present.
Billy seems like a calm/low energy guy, but his life path is as reckless and AMERICAN as possible.
I'm calling bullchit on his claim of being innocent of insider trading LOL. You don't make dozens of phone calls to a board member and make active trades without getting insider knowledge.
he did this interview long before he went to prison.

I'm finishing up Narcissus and Goldmund by Hermann Hesse. Personally this is one of my favorite books ever. I love the prose; how there is this deeply colorful stream-of-consciousness way the author writes and expresses Goldmund's mind to the reader. Easily one of my favorite books, highly recommended... and I'm still three chapters left. This was my first book by Hesse and I'm definitely going to pick up as much as I can from him.

Anybody got any recommendations for Christmas/holiday themed books? Something other than the classics like A Christmas Carol or Twas the Night Before Christmas or the like. I liked The Christmas Train by David Baldacci, looking for some similar recs.

Fun little Sci-Fi read regarding alternate timelines / multiverse. Was surprisingly easy to read despite the heavy subject matter. Very enjoyable however I feel it could have been way better if some parts were expanded on. Of course this would have made a much longer book and taken away from the ease of the read.

Just finished Michael Crighton's Jurassic Park (9.5/10). It has been over 20 years since I read it, and I had forgotten about many differences there are between it and the movie . . . primarily the list of who lives and who dies.

I haven't picked up more from Hesse yet, but I got a list going.I'm finishing up Narcissus and Goldmund by Hermann Hesse. Personally this is one of my favorite books ever. I love the prose; how there is this deeply colorful stream-of-consciousness way the author writes and expresses Goldmund's mind to the reader. Easily one of my favorite books, highly recommended... and I'm still three chapters left. This was my first book by Hesse and I'm definitely going to pick up as much as I can from him.
Just finished reading The Courage to Create by Rollo May. Always a good read, Rollo May books

Time travel, butterfly effect, Kennedy assassination.
I heard a lot of great things about this book but I've been putting it off as I'm not all that into the Kennedy thing, conspiracies and what not. Plus being a fairly large book, it's been on hold awhile.
Anyhow I finally picked it up, and cot damn, it was so fukking good. Blazed through it in just over a week. I love a good time travel story, and this one was excellent with a few different spins on it. The characters were fantastic, very easy for me to relate to. I hear a lot of complaints that Stephen king stucks at endings. I'll agree with that on several of his other books, but I thought this one ended perfect, Although it was heartbreaking.
It would have been cool if he would have expanded on a few parts near the climax, but then the book would have been pushing well over 1000 pages and I probably would still be putting it off.
King fan or not, I highly recommend checking this one out.

one of my coworkers saw me reading Stephen King a few months ago and brought in a stack of Koontz books for me to check out. I randomly grabbed this one and had a go. I've definitely heard his name tossed around plenty.
Easy to read, it had a nice pace / flow. I don't want to call it generic, but definitely a meat and potatoes feel. The characters seemed a little flat.... I didn't really get into any of them until way later in the book. Is it his writing or is it because I just came off a fantastic King book that had me so attached to the characters?
Anyhow, I'll definitely check out more of his stuff down the road. If anything, it could be easy filler material inbetween heavy reads.

one of my coworkers saw me reading Stephen King a few months ago and brought in a stack of Koontz books for me to check out. I randomly grabbed this one and had a go. I've definitely heard his name tossed around plenty.
Easy to read, it had a nice pace / flow. I don't want to call it generic, but definitely a meat and potatoes feel. The characters seemed a little flat.... I didn't really get into any of them until way later in the book. Is it his writing or is it because I just came off a fantastic King book that had me so attached to the characters?
Anyhow, I'll definitely check out more of his stuff down the road. If anything, it could be easy filler material inbetween heavy reads.

One of my favorite books by him is Odd Thomas. It's a series, but I think book one is the best and can probably be read as a standalone if you don't want to get into a whole series.

Both were excellent. The Company was a pretty amazing story and it was interesting to see how the initial enterprise actually worked with the indigenous peoples, treating them far better than they did as time went on and the company started to follow the beaver south and west. I always enjoy Adam Shoalts' books. He is a modern day explorer and his books are always well written, easy and interesting reads.

Both were excellent. The Company was a pretty amazing story and it was interesting to see how the initial enterprise actually worked with the indigenous peoples, treating them far better than they did as time went on and the company started to follow the beaver south and west. I always enjoy Adam Shoalts' books. He is a modern day explorer and his books are always well written, easy and interesting reads.

#57: Ascension by Nicholas Binge. I forgot where I heard about this book, but it just came out. Sci fi: A huge mountain appears in the middle of the Pacific and they send a expedition of scientists and mountaineers to climb it.
As an avid hiker & mountaineer myself (plus I love Sci-Fi) I had to read this. It was a fun book, I loved how it was narrated through letters, the characters were great. It was a mix of sci fi and spiritual, and it worked really well. I almost wish it was a bit longer. The end was chilling.
#58: The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King. Really short book, especially for King, weighing in around 250 pages. Fun little story about a young girl who gets lost on the Appalachian Trail in Maine / NH while on a short hike with her family. Felt a bit low key for a King story, but damn he writes characters, especially kids so well. I also do a lot of hiking in that same area, so it was an extra connection for me.

Cicero - The Republic and its laws - 3.5/5 - Honestly a really good text with the early, (semi-mythological) history of Rome in dialogue form, and then a description of the different forms of government, their merits and benefits, and why romes 'mixed' constitution is best. Unfortunately lots of the text is lost, so it's quite a fragmentary book otherwise i would've given it a higher score.
Tom Holland - Dynasty - 3.5/5 - Decent overview of the Julio-claudian dynasty (so augustus, tiberius, caligula, claudius, nero) but the detail is lacking too much for my taste, but it is a bit of a pop history. He even misses several important events from Augustuses life, even though that takes up half the book. Alright overall though
Cassius Dio - The reign of Augustus 3.5/5 - A classical history of augustus that was not bad at all, and is surely where we draw a lot of our detail from, but is not the most enjoyable narrative to read. I can see he's trying to mimic the great Thucydides, but unfortunately he falls short. He has a thucydides-style of putting long speeches into the mouths of people, but he waffles on far too long. Thucydides speeches last a few pages, Dios last a chapter.
