I flew Japan airlines JAL and highly recommend going that route its also very cheap for me that way...flights from Honolulu to Tokyo then to manila are the cheapest route for me.
no running water would not deter me as long as they have a good safe source of water.
I was just in the provinces and can confirm I would rather live in the province than most of the USA....however I live in the best place of Hawaii
the province despite being poor and 3rd world makes the USA seem like a moral less dystopia hell on earth...I feel safer and more at peace in the poorest province areas that are just rural tropical paradise despite no money. despite having nothing they seem to have everything.
when you get back from the provinces into the main parts of USA you will feel disgust.
