Hate to say it but Baldurs Gate 2 is still the best BG game.

And I do really live BG3 but the scale is just not up there with BG2.

BG3 act 1 and 2 are not that long once you've played them once, you fly through them on replays.

BG2 remains an epic game no matter how many times you play it, once you get out of the tutorial dungeon you have SO many options of where to go and what to do, so much freedom.

Theres way more and varied companions in BG2, more varied locations, it's just bigger and better.

The one advantage BG3 has is different outcomes based on different approaches, but the scale of the game is pretty limited in order to accomplish this.

Dark Alliance 2 was a game I loved. So I bought Dark Alliance on iPad, holy fuark the combat is tedious and dated.
Only 2 I ever played.

Waiting for iOS port to play 3.

Bg2 is also much more primitive in gfx so they could make it bigger. But lol BG3 is atleast 100+ hours for a playthrough so more than enough content imo.

Also combat system in BG1 and 2 sucks, RTWP is just bad and especially combat in BG2 which is just constant buffing. BG3 also feels much more like actual D&D than BG2.

And of course BG2 is more "epic" since it's based on high level, BG3 is a low level game and story comparable to BG1.

BG3 is better imo besides some of the woke garbage in ACT3 (would think half the city is gay lol)

BG3 being so consistently fantastic is a huge achievement. Besides technical stuff, I can only think of 2 knocks:

1. Due to the overhead perspective, weaker graphics and amount of RPG content (turned based combat, dice roll screens) it clearly focuses less on that immersive perspective that you get in games like Forbidden West or TLOU 2. Those perspectives make you feel closer to "real life" and less like you're playing a game whereas with BG3 you know you're playing a game. I get they are different styles but my dream is something in between. So far, Witcher 3 and Mass Effect Trilogy while not perfect, are the best balance of both styles I've played.


2. No crazy action set pieces like in Uncharted, God of War or FF 16 Eikon battles that make you jizz in your pants. Again, I get this is a different style of game but personally I miss those elements.

Regardless, halfway into the game I give it an easy 9+ personally, and if I had to judge it by the type of game it is then my score will definitely be higher.

Completley normal, it's a crpg. It's actually the first time we have such a detailed CRPG, probably why it's also appealing to casuals.

the benefit bg2 had is that the 'tiles' were handpainted and allowed the game to be massive so it was gave you a lot of options on what to explore or not explore.

bg3 as a few large maps where you are expected to explore all of them to complete content with choices changes the outcomes of events

Man there's even a Baldur's Gate cycle where we constantly hear about the last iteration actually being better than the current?
