Why do retards gamble on sports so much? (serious thread)

Why do all my friends constantly gamble on Draftkings and FandDuel?

It makes no sense. No one I know is up money. One kid I know is down 10K lifetime. Just an absolute idiotic way to lose money.

2 main reasons:

1 - Makes watching games more exciting.
2 - They think they actually know the game.

One of my mates is the king of horse racing, always on forums, knows 3/4 of trainers in the state, can tell you everything about each and every horse in every race, and yet he still loses money.

How? Literally everyone I know is down money

Sports gambling is 50/50. How does anyone profit from this? It's like profiting 30K from betting a coin toss the whole year

I'm up on MMA many times the initial investment, it's the only sport on which I bet. I put time into watching and studying film, tho.

I always do pretty well with late regular season and playoff NBA. I don't even do any arbitrage or shop lines or anything like that. Just use one book and know the game.

Sports is really the only thing you can gamble on because you have "superior information" like the equity markets, etc.

Cards, slots are for dumbasses.

I've been able to build models to predict O/U for prop bets in the Superbowl, basically I know what that # should be before the line is released. Example, Joe Burrow a few years ago passing. You get in early before the lines adjust where there is value.

You have to be systematic and have a rigorous process, otherwise you are throwing your money away.

I'm reading Billy Walters book now. A lot of what he says is how I approach it and this was before even opening the book.

It's not. You forecast points for each team and if you have it differently than Vegas you put your $ where you have an advantage and value.

I only gamble a few $'s here and there and to play DFS with my friends. Makes watching sports more exciting.

Never got into sports betting, probably because I never followed sports and would have no idea how to play.
I do however waste money on lottery tickets. I have a running subscription, and it’s the only way I’m going to be able to start Misc island

because idiots like this think they'll be the one to win even though the odds are inherently stacked against you.

This is a fair point, tbh.

With casino games, you are competing against the rules of each game, and they are set so that you are statistically guaranteed to lose.

With stock trading, you are competing against the gigantic financial institutions playing counterparty to your order, and the deck is so stacked against you that you're all but guaranteed to lose. The big boys have spent millions if not billions of man-hours scoping out every edge against you that they could find.

With sports betting, you are competing against Joe Public, and he's basically a fukktard. Draft Kings wants to balance both sides and take a vig, so you are essentially betting that you are right ~10% more often than the public is. It's tough to find a consistent 10% edge, but it's not literally impossible like in those other situations.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with it if you're in complete control of your money and whatever you gamble, you can afford to lose. So for me, betting $20 on a major game is nothing, whilst for Bill Gates, putting $10,000 on a game is also nothing and he wouldn't miss it at all if he lost all of it.

It's fine if you're doing to simply make a game more enjoyable.

If you do it as a form of income or out of desperation, you are stupid. You are up against people whose entire job it is to stack the odds against you. Their 9-5 is research, analytics, models, algorithms etc. to keep the profits coming in for the betting company, and NOT you.

To beat them and turn this into a long-term source of income you need to be better at the game than them. You'd better be an autistic savant. If you're making winning bets without any number crunching, models or simulations you're on a lucky run and the law of averages will straighten your ass out over time.

All in all, if you had that kind of knowledge to make reliably predictable bets you'd be way better of investing that money in the stock market. Why do wealthy people invest in stocks rather than sports betting?

I'm up 30K YTD. lol keep up the cope.

Sports Betting and Poker are the two "gambling" forms where you can actually have an edge.

Aristocrat has slots all over the world. How big is gambling in Australia since you have one of the most popular company that makes slot machines?

betting on sports is very profitable as long as you aren't an idiot. you must use unit betting and profitability calculations though. the reason it's such a lucrative industry is so many drunk casuals do it. if you take a analytic approach it's fairly easy to win long term

My lifetime balance on FANDUEL is net positive, and I've cashed profitable for the last 5 weekends of wagering in a row.

Gambling is the most fun and cheapest (even profitable) form of entertainment if you aren't a chronic loser at it.

EDIT: just checked, lifetime ROI is 52%. COMPLETELY unsustainable, obviously I'm on a heater. But still.

The annoying part is that you have to pay tax on this chit in the USA.

The sports betting companies aren't researching and betting on the outcomes of games. Their goal is avoid exposure to the outcomes of games, by finding a line that gets equal money on both sides of the bet. Then they take a percentage of the action.
