Can't see the guy getting convicted. Accidents like this can happen and when your momentum gets you swinging on an edge of your skate it can throw you in odd ways. Don't know if this was the case but it's enough of a defence to cause reasonable doubt. Even if he told someone on his team that he was go in a go kill that guy right before that shift you can still say that's just hockey talk (and this isn't premeditated).

Realistically, the guy is a chippy player and made a stupid millisecond decision to be dirty without really thinking about the consequences. Hockey is full of douchebags like that. But good luck proving that in court.

It's the same as making a dumb mistake while driving and hitting someone. That's the whole definition of manslaughter. If there's justice in the world he'll at least be put away for something like 5 years (and have to serve 2-3 years of it).

will never know what his intention was. to me it looks like the player he bumped into knocked him off balance and sent his momentum backwards resulting in his leg being lifted to maintain it

regardless though, this is going to happen again unless neck guards are made mandatory across all levels of hockey asap. it's pure idiocy that this hasn't been done already

been saying it for decades since i saw the malarchuck vid as a kid then watched the zednik incident happen years later. it's actually unbelievable more players haven't died this way given how easily it can occur in a multitude of scenarios

the nhl needs to smarten the fuk up and lead by example here

Just posted this in the other thread

Not the same situation but showing how momentum in hockey can make things seem to defy physics.

And these incidents do happen...

https://youtu.be/ZVcFrJ2joGs?si=XipdAuWEFUJ4Sa4R

And anyone asking how rare it is for a leg to ever come that high? Not that rare with any contact.

Once again, my point is that they can't prove anything beyond a reasonable doubt.

Man, my daughters figure skate and it's almost daily that I see a spinning persons skate near another or someone almost skate over a hand. Plus they are encouraged to quit weaing helmets by the time they are 6. It's wild.

Neck guard was my least favourite piece of gear and we never wore them even when they became mandatory unless the ref sent you off. I agree, set the example in the higher leagues.

Ya but two handing someone or chasing them down and jumping on them is obvious intent. Maybe I'm wrong but I just can't see an entire jury deciding 100% this was intentional.

These are all different and very clearly accidents. This incident was a lot worse because you can pretty clearly see he had intent to hit the guy with a skate. Maybe he didn't mean to kill him but it's beyond reasonable doubt imo that he meant to hit and injure him. Don't know how this will work but if it's a jury I think this guy is done. Not for murder but manslaughter or something similar.
