Microsoft terminates free gamepass for employees - Employees are unhappy!

Microsoft is removing the free Xbox Game Pass Ultimate benefit for most of its 238,000 employeesand some aren’t happy about it. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the company started informing employees this week that in January 2024 the free Xbox Game Pass Ultimate benefit for permanent Microsoft employees will no longer be available.

I understand that Xbox employees will continue to keep the benefit, but the vast majority of Microsoft employees who aren’t part of Xbox / Microsoft Gaming will see the benefit disappear next year. Microsoft employees will be able to purchase a discounted 12-month Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Subscription at the company’s internal store.

SomeMicrosoft employees have taken to the company’s internal messaging platform to voice their objections about the benefit being removed. The employee posts even prompted Xbox chief Phil Spencer to respond, noting that he wasn’t aware of the changes and is looking into the situation.

The removal of the Microsoft employee benefit comes months after Xbox Game Pass saw a price hike for the first time. Microsoft moved Xbox Game Pass Ultimate from $14.99 per month to $16.99, alongside price increases for the Xbox Series X console in most markets outside the US. Microsoft also launched Xbox Game Pass Core in September to replace Xbox Live Gold.

Xbox chiefPhil Spencer warned more than a year ago that Xbox Game Pass growth on console had slowed down, with Microsoft choosing to focus more on PC Game Pass throughout 2023. Microsoft hasn’t provided updated Game Pass subscriber numbers for nearly two years now.

WTF is happening over at Microsoft? I thought they were a trillion dollar company and they cant even afford to give employees benefits??? Slimy Phil is only doing this just to artificially boost their gamepass subscription numbers at the next quarter when they force employees to sign up for gamepass earning back the money they gave out as wages.




I'd rather be terminated than lose my gamepass subscription!

238,000 employees is insane. I never knew Microsoft was so big.

If the forum is anything to judge by, most people without Gamepass seem to be unhappy.

That's honestly brutal. What a weird benefit to pull to save costs.

However, sometimes when you are given something chitty for free you just don't have the motivation to explore the alternative and now some of these folks will grab a PS5 and PS+ and experience great games.

Lol. Why is Microsoft fussing over what's probably $4million/yr AT MOST? That's assuming if their employees even want it / use it (they possibly do for their kids/family if they're not a gamer).

People seem to think that wages are the only form of compensation. Employers hire as many employees as needed for efficiency, pay them a wage, then give them other benefits that are less expensive to maintain than straight wages. These benefits are what attracts people to their business.

When inflation occurs, the company has a few choices; cut wages, cut benefits, cut workers, become more innovative in efficiency. Each has a separate limit. MS appears to be cutting benefits.

Tech is taking a big hit, probably the biggest of any other industry. It was artificially inflated, and is not as essential as other industries, like food, water, utilities, energy etc. In other words, the tech bubble is bursting. Elon took over Twitter and laid off or fired thousands of employees because he’s smart. X is now profitable again, working more efficiently, and is more effective at targeting what it does best.

The auto industry is next. Thousands have already been laid off, but huge lay offs and benefit cuts are incoming.

Activision has been a total mess, doesn't surprise me how they need to fire a bunch of people. The entire publisher needs restructuring, and I bet there's loads of people who were working for them that are now useless and unneeded with Microsoft owning it.
