Do you believe in genetic determinism?

There’s a growing belief that everything is the way it is meant to be, what happens to you/what situation you find yourself in is largely the result of your genetics.

I think it holds truth to a larger extent than people are comfortable admitting. There are certain people that just cannot achieve what other genetically gifted people can achieve, no matter how hard they work. However, the problem is when people use this argument as an excuse to not better themselves and/or stay lazy.

Nope, I think after the explosion of knowledge we've had since the early 90s the idea that genotype determins phenotype is an antiquated notion.

But then such logic could be used to excuse/justify all kinds of bad behavior or bad habits. It would cause chaos in society.

People can use it as an excuse to be **** human beings for sure. But assuming you are doing everything within your power to become the best version of yourself, the situation you find yourself in is the way it is. You can be at peace with yourself because you’ve exhausted all efforts possible.

This is when genetic determinism can be used to say, ‘look I did what I could and this is where I ended up. It is what it is. It’s all I could’ve done’.

It's settled science that IQ is an excellent predictor of success. The only ones who reject this are science deniers who wish to believe everyone is equal, despite all the evidence to the contrary

As I’ve clearly stated, if they’re using this argument as an excuse to be a lazy kunt that does drugs all day, then they have no room to talk about genetic determinism. They are not putting in any work and cannot genuinely say ‘I did the best I could and this is how my life situation happened to unfold’.

I see your point. I was looking at it through the lens of: someone does their very best, and they might fall short of something, let’s say putting on 40lbs or muscle naturally. He has trained his absolute balls off day in day out, doing everything perfectly, but only puts on 30-35lbs of muscle. Then there’s one guy who hasn’t trained as hard the other guy did, but just looks more impressive due to his genetics who has put on 40lbs. The guy who trained balls to the wall isn’t as impressive as the other guy because he is limited due to his genetics. His genetics determined how much muscle he was able to put on naturally.

I’ve tested 131 on IQ (srs) yet I only make $50k/yr. I don’t believe intelligence is a particularly reliable indicator. Some of the dumbest people I know are successful (including my superiors at the office). Environment and circumstance supersede IQ by a large margin IMO.

Having two standard deviations above average IQ leads to better outcomes than having two-sigma family wealth. Or at least it did in 2007... it would be fascinating study to retry today and see if that's changed as wealth inequality has become entrenched.

Education and jobs generally reward hard work / conscientiousness as much as IQ, so they need to be paired to an extent.

Smart people understand where they stand in life and dont waste time trying to be what they cant
