Commercial construction work was fun. The hardest part was ignoring the tradies, a lot of them are on drugs and low class people. Work goes by fast and if you care about doing your best, it's fulfilling. Good for body from 20's and 30's bad for body 40's and 50's.

Woke up at 5:30 - Jobsite at 6:45 - Work at 7am but usually went into the gate at 6:50 to get in before the scum. Leave at 5pm, sometimes 7pm sometimes 4pm.

I only worked it for a summer/winter/summer/summer. If I was going to continue being a tradie I would have become an piledriver, or a lower skilled operator; later on working way to school for project manager, safety, engineer etc. I don't have the steady hands to be a welder, cutter or large machine operator and I don't have the tradie mindset to be a foreman or superintendent. I liked concrete work.

I worked in a oil refinery before. Worst work ever. Hurry up and do nothing, 3 safety meetings a day, paid to be a snitch on other workers. All workers were dumb and if you asked them to help you -- "not my job". This was Louisiana.

Paid a fire watch to sit 100ft away with a fire extinguisher, like that would help if we drilled and hit something. Paid another guy to watch the gate, the gate was in the refinery. Paid another guy to flag the crane when it walked, which was twice per month...but just in case.

Brb Lock out Tag Out signs everywhere even on non hazardous equipment. We had to LOTO our chop saw.

Actually $18-21 is about right for a laborer right out of Highschool. You want a young dependable 18 yr old? That's what you pay him, decent pay for an honest days work. Wages have gone up everywhere, got to stay competitive. Chick-fil-A, McDonald's, Walmart all pay like $14/hr.

If you're in the right company you can move into a superintendent role and get salary. Superintendents make between $60k - $120k. No degree needed.

My dad was making 90k as Superintendent around 2002. In 2021 when he retired it was 110k base, 30k bonuses + all the other benefits added up to 175k. He traveled all around region, as a subcontractor the jobs lasted 2 weeks to 3 months.

You're dredging up memories of my past. And not fond ones, mind you. I worked all kinds of working class/tradie/labourer jobs to put myself through school. I used to work with some real special people. It's a pretty miserable existence. The only saving grace was that it was a means to an end. I can't imagine the dread that would accompany the realization that this is it for me.

One dude was promoted to Foreman, got a company gas card and a bunch of tools. He ended up selling all the tools and standing outside a gas station selling gas from the company credit card.

Another foreman did a suicide murder because his wife cheated on him.

Another foreman picked up street walkers. He died of a heart attack around age 45, was grossly overweight. Taught me the saying "It's your world, I'm just living in it"; I say that when the person I'm watching is about to do something dumb.
