MJ isn't the GOAT vocalist. He had a great voice that peaked when he was kid till he was early 20's (Off the Wall) but he really could sing sing back then. After many botchered nose jobs, he was still great but was far from his peak.

Regarding the clown thing - MJ became gimmicky when the 90s hit, before that the music was more of his driving force. During BAD he had cringe moments in his videos and music but they were very little, after that is when his dance moves and singing style became a bit oversaturated with cringe stuff. Before the 90's he was class, after that his music was good when you turned off the TV and ignore some of the tracks where he was screaming doing the ''agh'' and ''heehees'' 20 times per 3 minutes.
