when I was ten I begged for the NES for Christmas and the OG Zelda was the biggest reason why simply because of the commercials.

I play it every year on Christmas (actually throughout the season), that opening note that plays with the waterfall opening still reminds me of Christmas more than any Christmas carol.

I got an N64 and OOT a few years ago but I put it down cause I was relying on online walkthroughs too much and I wanted to try to experience it like someone would back then. I gotta go back to that and start over. But man somethings were just too much, like the chickens

OoT is the best Zelda game easily.

Nothing will ever replace the OG though for me. Too much magic in that. All the trials to finally beat it - including accidentally deleting my character a few times. Three months to beat it. Now I can do it in under two hours

And because the cartridges were gold. Early Zelda had an amazing marketing scheme, including what you are taking about having to outsource information.


Some things are almost impossible to find without the help of someone else. Like you would never think to play a specific song in a specific location that may provide you a jar or something.

In order to complete those tasks, we had to talk to other people about it. I do believe a huge part of the games success, besides the obvious 3D open world introduction, has to do with the fact cooperation with others is necessary. Also the fact the game appears to be difficult but when examined by anyone with any experience you understand it is actually easy. So when we complete what we believe are difficult tasks to figure out we feel good about ourselves, but the tasks were never that hard.

Right - reminds me of the OG when you found so many things because someone's older brother found it. In fact I remember the first hidden door I found in the OG - fourth screen to the right of the start, bomb the second block next to the path North and there is a heart container/potion guy (seriously, you could buy potions but not heart containers, who picked potions?). I remember finding the hidden stores that sold magic shields for 90 rupies - I told a classmate they refused to believe they were legitimate magic shields (they cost 130 or 160 in normal stores).

yeah what else was near the chickens - the graveyard I think you had to go and talk to someone at daytime, then go back at night and do something oddly specific.

And those spiders that are only a side quest...ugh.

I actually ordered SNES usb controllers recently and I have never played A Link to the Past so maybe I'll download that emulator and play that over Thanksgiving break before taking on OOT again - and now instead of looking at walkthroughs I'll DM you.


I actually am finishing up Crystalis on the NES - my daughter saw it and asked if it was "off brand Zelda" - pretty accurate

The Mario movie was made by Illumination and there were plenty of areas where it could have been a disaster, but under Miyamotos watchful eye it was a fairly competent movie. Its about as good as you're going to get from a video game franchise with absolutely no plot yet they managed to get an hr and 30 minutes of material out of it.

As long as he's overseeing the project I'm sure it will be safe from nonsense like that.

My only problem is that its going to be live-action. Some things just don't translate properly from video-game to live action. Something that would otherwise look cool in animation (like Link performing a spin attack will probably look corny when its "Tom Holland" (or whoever they choose to be link ) doing it.

animation would bring more life to the world;

I was a bit too young to fully experience the OG Zelda. For myself, my first one was a link to the past. I played that when I was 6. Incredible game.

I recently finished tears of the kingdom. I got a switch as a gift a few years back with breath of the wild. I'm really glad I jumped back into that because both were a really enjoyable experience and it was so nice to play a zelda game again given that the last I played a bit was twilight princess.

If you ever get a chance to really play the OG, I know I am biased from my childhood but it still holds up so well - unlike so many NES games that I look back on are just trash.

I am looking at one of those handheld emulator gaming systems, I forget what it is called. they look like a switch but it's one solid piece. I told my gf she has to get me one if she ever wants me to fly somewhere over two hours.

I actually own it. I have the boxed versions of zelda 1 and 2, the gold cartridges. I've tried to run through both many times. It's just so hard to find the time nowadays. Great game, though. An obvious classic. Can't imagine what it must have been like to play when it first game out.
