Honestly ppl may disagree with this opinion, but a modern fps games can't survive on console alone and reach those "extra" heights.

FPS games are sooooo heavily based on popularity. And everyone's favorite streamers are not playing fps games on console. They will do console game playthroughs and stuff, but you're never going to see the most popular streamers on twitch playing console mp games on a regular basis.

These dudes sway so much of the population for fps. And that's everything. You have to have a populated community and devs who update right. Any new fps game that launches does a bunch of sponsored streams for this exact reason. You have to get these big pro players and streamers into your game.

As an apex player I felt an immediate shift in the player base when nickmercs decided to drop Warzone and become a pro apex player. The amount of players he brought to the game was insane. I had so many more call of duty noobs in my lobbies, for real. We used to joke about it in discord how the nickmercs era was one of our favorites because we stomped cod players all day. The meme was instead of bot lobbies...we got cod lobbies.

I love cross play because I can play with console pleb friends, but it ruins competitive integrity for everyone on both pc and console.


Console fps games can be fine as casual games, but you aren't getting an fps game to the level of apex/cod/valorant/ without the pc player base. That is just the home of fps games, period. Pretty much every successful shooter franchise started on pc then went to console, not really the other way around except for Halo.
