Imagine not having a physical copy of the games you like

I got tons of physical games that I like. I just stopped buying discs when they became physical DRM discs with little to no practical value.

Face it, most modern games are unplayable without online updates.

Digital. My apartment is already full of crap. If I had a case + CD for every game I own across the various DRMs (and even digital games I own on consoles) I'd be classified as a hoarder, srs.

I’ve often wondered about this myself. For some reason I have always wanted a hard copy, but I can in the future where that probably won’t be an option .
Do computers even come with cd readers anymore ?

Maybe if you are into collecting for display sake, I get that, but I don't think physical games from this generation will be "cool" and sought after like classic snes/n64/ps1 stuff like that. Those games and systems are still playable, today's consoles will be bricks in 20 years with the need for constant online updates, so I don't see the point.

There's just something nice about seeing a stack of physical game boxes which I'm not willing to let go of yet tbh, I do buy digital too but only if I cba for delivery of the physical game

A lot of new games don't even contain the entire game on the disc anymore, you literally have to download a big update just to get the rest of the content. Then there's the fact that most new games are basically a beta version when it comes to the day 1 disc version even if they do contain the entire game. Games that are really playable right off a disc are few and far between, and even then they still require you to install the entirety of the game data onto a hard drive. Basically, the only real difference that having a disc makes these days is requiring you to put a disc in the drive in order to play the game, it's basically just a glorified form of DRM.

That, and if your disc drive ever breaks (which is usually the first thing to break on a console) you're basically screwed. Heck even with the swappable disc drive they have on the new PS5 slim, they require you to activate it over the internet before it will work, so if you don't have any internet you're still screwed.

unless you are someone going to resale the physical disc, physical games are just DRM to access your digital game.

Brb 25% of less of the game is on the disc and you download the rest

if they ever decide to take down those servers in the future your physical disc is useless as you won't be able to download the rest of the game.

Funny thing is, if you have a digital library you have a far better chance of being able to play your games in the future thanks to backwards compatibility. They will probably do away with disc drives next gen, so people with a modern game disc library are going to be screwed. Meanwhile those with digital libraries will simply need to log into their account to access all their games and play them on newer hardware.

I don’t plan on selling the disk.

digital equals physical when it comes to actually playing the game but only physical offers a weirdly happy/nostalgia feel by simply seeing the box art, game case, ...
