Mercedes to lock additional acceleration behind $1200/yr paywall
The $1,200 yearly subscription improves performance by boosting output from the motors by 20–24 percent, increasing torque, and shaving around 0.8 to 0.9 seconds off 0–60 mph acceleration when in Dynamic drive mode (via The Drive). The subscription doesn’t come with any physical hardware upgrades — instead, it simply unlocks the full capabilities of the vehicle, indicating that Mercedes intentionally limited performance to later sell as an optional extra.
This comes after BMW's similar move with the $18/mo headed seats.Wood you pay?

Companies selling EVs in particular will resort to more stuff like this because EVs bring in less service/parts revenue than combustion vehicles, and servicing/parts for the existing fleet is where these companies actually make their money.
If these companies have less revenue coming in over the long term from cars needing parts outside of warranty, the business model will need to change

They're already getting $7500 taxpayer subsidies per car.

Tesla has been selling similar stuff for a while now, all the way up to people throwing away as much as $15k on “full-self driving” that also adds zero hardware and is literally just a toggle button in the dev menu

Imagine being a CEO and trying to figure out ways to drive shareholder profits and then the idea hits you to just start endlessly charging your customers Op-Ex for the Cap-Ex purchase they've bought for you.
Im in the tech world and they started this crap a year ago. It would be one thing if the base product price went down. It never did/does. They just charge the same price and then start charging for the options that used to be included.

Brokies will still pay, anything for more debt to keep up with Larry next door and his 7 series Bimmer. All while living on government handouts.

It elicits an initial negative reaction and reeks of the same sort of greed that resulted in game studios releasing games with "loot crates" you have to buy to actually enjoy the game, but I suppose it depends a bit. If the base price of the vehicle is correspondingly lower because of the reduced manufacturing costs vs. producing a broader range of trim packages, I could potentially see the sense in it.
For example, assume there is some base model for $40K and a performance model for $50K. If you could buy the base model for $40K and pay $1,200 a year to unlock the same level of performance as the $50K model, it seems like it could potentially work out in your favor depending on the length of your ownership and what happens upon resale. In a financing context, you also aren't paying interest on that $1,200 like you might be if you'd gone for the $50K trim level.
I haven't looked into the real-life numbers, so it could just be gouging too. We'll see.

Good strategy. People have proven they'll pay for it.
When it comes to vehicles people are kind of cucks. People will literally finance a car worth 75-100% of their yearly salary on a 6-8 year plan so they can drive something fancy.

Lmao. In a dystopian future, all of us plebs are going to be driving rusted up relics from the 2000s just like how Cubans all drive 1950s cars. Only the ultra rich will be driving new cars because they’ll be the only ones able to afford monthly subscriptions for their breaks and windshield wipers. Fkin SAD!

I doubt it is something that would interest me. I know of some though that probably would pay.

eventually people are going to start shooting at cars on dealer lots in the middle of the night to protest this disrespect. It's just another virtual plantation they want consumers on.

However, my theory is this is simply because the technology is so close/comparable now between models you have to differentiate somehow to justify the cost. Specially with EV, it's all basically programming.
