You learn some amazing life hacks ITT. Next piano lesson after each new thing I learn I'll tell my teacher "thanks for the refresher!" and I'm sure that'll be enough to convince him, an expert on the subject, that I know as much about jazz piano as he does!

You were free to respond to my inquiry with, "Yeah...? Why is that?" instead of "lulzy" along with what looked like a half-assed attempt at harmonizing the scale.

You're in a PhD program. That is exactly the forum where one should expect people to analyze everything with a microscope. I want my physicians to be the guys people wanted to punch in the face in med school, for example.

I appreciate your theory refresher though, regarldess.
The point has always been, since adimare posed the backdoor, is that the diminished/dominant relationship is not an abstruse rule of substitution; it is a common rule of substitution in jazz.

Suggesting they're "kind of interchangeable" after reading my post indicates you either a) didn't understand my post, or b) attempting to change the theory to rationalize why you didn't know it. Come on, man.

As for all the other stuff, I don't remark on it in the misc and won't here either.

z4: "So when are you available in September to play?"

Deep: "On second thought, I don't play golf with broads. You're such a scumbag that I'd be much more inclined to just slap the chit out of you."

z4: "MMA match works, too. So when are you available this month?

Deep: "I won't subject myself to being in the presence of a scumbag."

With analog gear you can go to bed thinking you've dialed in a great tone, plug in the next day and not be happy with it, then you start pulling stuff off the board, screwing around, making it sound even worse. Too many variables. You can just scroll through presets until you hear something you like at that moment.

Depends on the music.

For example I love that early VH tone, especially Fair Warning and Diver Down. I love Holdsworth's tone on Wardenclyffe Tower and Hard Hat Area. Vai on Alien Love Secrets. Knopfler on Brothers in Arms. Too many to mention. I typically don't play with much gain but lately I've been missing it because it has its place for that 80s stuff which you know I'll nuthug until I'm landfill.

Not attempting to change the theory at all, and obviously I'm not contesting what you've said, just stating that many years ago when I was making chords from it I was just noticing the cool lounge sounds you get from different shapes. I couldn't GAF that there were rules of substitution which made them interchangeable.

If you want to have a theory discussion at this level, you gotta give me some time to catch up with study.
Back off, Warchild.

They're rules that became rules because they're intuitive.

An A7 chord has the pitches A C# E G.

On an F#7 chord (F# A# C# E), the A from the A7 is the #9, the G is the b9, and the other two pitches (C# E) are already chord tones of F#7; therefore, playing an A7 chord over an F#7 chord results in an F#7b9#9 tonality; ergo, A7 can sub for F#7.

You've had a few months to catch up from the backdoor dominant (which comes from this) since it's been posted, no?

This level is basic jazz harmony level. It would require what is covered in two semesters of traditional harmony first, and then this shiit is first semester jazz harmony.

You keep making the implication that it's some super advanced shiit that you need to refresh yourself with, but it's just basic jazz harmony that you still need to learn. Nothing wrong with that, brah.

I don't have a favourite tone since I think it's too context and style specific. I have favorite tones in different contexts. Any player for whom I can immediately recognize their sound gets a place for me:

1. Slash.

2. EVH.

3. Vai.

4. Dimebag.

5. George Lynch.

Plus, remember when Leon Todd was demo'ing the Axe Fx for a synthwave track. The tone he had on that was unbelievable. That dude knows his sounds. I'll definitely see Ragdoll if they come my way.

I'll also tell you a tone I hate. That's Tony Macalpine's tone he had for the first half of his career. Very bad tone, it was like a distorted keyboard. Incredible guitarist though, and very nice guy. I met him in 2005 when he played with Virgil Donati.

When my plate clears up, absolutely. Levine's book is like 10 metres away in the university library. Believe me, I'd love nothing more than to have free days to just read novels and study this stuff. I've got an upcoming conference in a few weeks, so maybe around Christmas I can devote some time to catch up and study. Oh, and actually get myself a friggin guitar at last.

With that said, the modulation he used in The Wall tours of 1980/81 was also really special, and closer to what was used in the studio.

yeah true, I think it's because i've listened to every version with his black strat, that him playing this charvel and doing different stuff kinda speaks to me

can't be wrong with any version

So I plugged in a pedal into my digital audio interface playing through my amp sim software on my computer and why have I not been doing this sooner. It sounds great.

Unaware of NAM, aware me? Scuffham is a pretty good program it sounds very realistic to my ears. Today I plugged my guitar into my EHX Ram’s Head reissue pedal, then straight into my Scarlett 2i2 and ran S-Gear on a clean preset and I was pretty pleased with the sound. Will be trying more of my pedals through my digital rig tomorrow.

NAM is essentially a free profiling platform, similar to Tonex and Kemper.

I took a look at a few YouTube demos of the program. It looks cool but seems a little convoluted to use, as there’s quite a bit of profiles to sort through. I’ll try to get around to messing with it though.

I think the flexibility loses the main message.

The practical reality is just to open the profile you want and start playing.

If you're interested, I captured my own amp (Mesa MIVb circa 2007) in a bunch of configurations with and without a cabinet.

If you have it installed and wanna check out my toanz, I'm happy to share.
