Let's pick a year for Marvel and look at x2.5. I'm picking 2017, which is when they were doing well - but also not their peak.

GotG2. 200m budget. 770mwwbo. 220 over x2.5 *(edit: whoops, 270 over)
Spiderman Homecoming. 175m budget. 880mwwbo. 443 over 2.5
Thor: Ragnarok. 180m budget. 850mwwbo. 400 over 2.5

... so, What are you talking about? This obviously shows how and why these movies are so bloated and why they (until now at least) kept getting made -- they were printing money, easily blowing past x2.5 the budget and putting out massive movies -- this was hardly their best year, that would be 2018-2019 w/ the Avengers/Thanos conclusion. Want to go over those years, too?

Marvel kept doing this - because they thought they could. They assumed Marvel stans would keep coming out, they figured they could get away with inserting more and more 'wokeness' into it (and not that Black Panther was woke, but it got a lot of good press for having a black cast and it's positive depiction of Wakanda), both getting money at the BO and scoring DEI points w/ Vanguard and Blackrock at the same time.

Unfortunately, for Disney stock holders, they got greedy. They went too far and put out too much product, stopped tight quality control, went too woke and let budgets bloat out of control, thinking even previously unproven characters like the GotG or Antman would rack in 700M+.

So, a lot of things biting them in the ass, all of their own making, but these chickens have come home to roost.

Btw, how many Marvel movies are slated for 2024, Sillie? (A: one - all the others got pushed back as they panic, because this year has been miserable and a complete failure)
And the one movie is Deadpool 3, and as long as it's rated R, with a low budget, and the studios leave it alone, it should do extremely well.

It should, but I'm curious if it will be the weakest (or highest grossing) of the 3. Maybe both. Word is Ryan Reynolds had a hard time agreeing with Disney over the direction of DPIII.
Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin joined in November 2020 as writers
Previously, the writers had been Reynolds and a couple other dudes.

Doesn't seem like they have done much, although a couple of episode's of Bob's Burgers, so maybe they're funny. Plus, they're only complimenting the previous writing team and not entirely in charge (ala Marvels).

The first had a budget of 58m. The second 110m. We don't know what the budget here is and I also can not see it's been confirmed r-rated. I suspect, pg-13, toned down, larger budget, more general audience Disney than I or II.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

If it's PG-13 and toned down, than we'll always have the memories of the first two.

It is rated R. And this is actually the first movie greenlit by ex ceo Bob Chapek. Bob Iger is lying when he tries to pass any of the blame. All these bombs are movies greenlit by him and made by people he hired.

This is part of Disney's problem (and others) with their movies. Everyone wants to throw money into keeping franchises alive. They don't care how much it costs or how much they'll lose, so long as they can keep the perceived value of the franchise going. People don't want to see another recycled Snow White or Little Mermaid movie. I haven't seen Barbie but I would assume this was a fresh idea for a movie which attracted the audience. I'll watch Oppenheimer but I won't see another Indiana Jones, MIB, or Star Wars movie... I'm just not interested in recycled content. Actually, I'm pretty much fed up with it and I surmise a lot of viewers feel the same way.

Godzilla Minus One has a reported budget of $15 million and it blows all these $200 million dollar movies out the water.
Not only does it look better, it has an actual story about people with actual human feelings. Definitely the best movie of the year, and probably the best movie of like the last 20 years.

Cliffs:
- Recaps the Disney/Florida feud over grooming children
- The district in Florida is being accused of doing shady potentially illegal activities
- Accusation: Disney controlled local Gov't through bribery

Note: the source of this is fairly anti-Disney and critical of the farleft woke policies they've implemented. IMO, a very centrist view to have (one the MSM would quickly dub 'FAR RIGHT' I'm sure) but at the same time, do consider the source is negative towards and biased against Disney.

So The Marvels cost around 300 million, possibly more, it's only made around 200 million dollars. Who knows what the marketing was, probably 140 million.

According to Sillie, it's only a hundred million dollar lost.

Those who know better, know that this movie lost hundreds of millions of dollars for the studios, and the theater should just boot it, and replace it with another movie, maybe some classics to fill the spot.

Let me help you out because you're a moron. And I never said chit about the Marvels. Huge flop.

Let's take the case of the Expendables Franchise. Let's look at the first 3 films since the 4th was a massive flop. The production budget listed for the first 3 was $282M. The domestic box office was $227M and the foreign box office was $562M for a total of $790M.

Let's assume 75% of the production budget to account for marketing, so the films need to generate cash of $494M to BE. We all know, except Dave because he's an idiot, that the production company takes only a % of the BO, the foreign BO a much less bigly percentage. So let's assume that the study gets 65% of the domestic BO and 40% of the foreign BO. That's $148M + $316M = $464M in cash back to the studio, or a loss on the 3 movies of $30M. Using the same %'s the 3rd one was a loss of $65M. YET the studio green lit another $100M budget for a 4th flick for a franchise they at best had broken even on and were coming off a bigly loss of the 3rd film.

Now help me out cultist, why oh why oh why would the studio light another $100M on fire after losing $65M on the preceding film?

Could it be their production budgets are garbage and there are revenue streams that plebes like Dave have zero clue about?

You could do this same math with tons of other films yet the studios keep lighting their money on fire to make these big budget movies.

Godzilla vs Kong cost roughly $175M to make, made $493M in box office and yep another one is right around the corner.

Use your heads cultist.

Disney has warned its investors that the company's products and political views may not align with what viewers want - and risk harming its bottom line.

In a public financial filing for the fiscal quarter ending in September, the corporation acknowledged the risks it is taking 'relating to misalignment with public and consumer tastes and preferences for entertainment.'

Disney has struggled of late to successfully pitch its costly films to audiences, losing a reported $1billion on its last four high-profile releases.

But Sillie says these movies don't lose money?

And holy ****, spending 330 million dollars on a Snow White reboot?

Avengers Infinity War cost 325-400 million. Of curse that movie made over 2 billion dollars.

I think something Sillie is missing is the way Hollywood moves on inertia. What we are seeing in theaters today are reactions made two to three years in the making.

So, prior to the pandemic: Yes, these massive blockbusters with 200-300M budgets were printing money. The pandemic came, ****ed with everything and threw every model out the window, and now we're seeing pre-pandemic projects.

As I read his arguments, I see him kind of incredulous as to -why- they would make these massive movies when they're all tanking. What he's not realizing is these are icebergs that move slowly from the moment they're greenlit to production wrapping and them being distributed to movie theaters. This is a 120mph car crash that is taking months, maybe years, to unfold.

Side-thought: Imagine the ****ing stress Iger is under. Everyone knows how ****ed they are and how ****ed they have been but he's stuck dealing with this, probably until he's gone in 2026 when his contract is up. In that light - it makes sense why so many projects are getting delayed from his stand point. He might even try to push some of the biggest stinkers (I'm looking at Snow White) so far out that it's someone elses problem.

Imagine what Snow Woke's actual budget will be if they're reshooting, editing the hell out of it for another year. Don't forget the theaters themselves do get a cut of the ticket sales too. Even though some big studios get many millions in tax credits from foreign countries for filming in them they generally need about 2.5x production budget to break even. 3x sometimes, but most are around the 2.5x mark.

So even if Disney does a big switch and concentrates on quality storytelling over agendas it will realistically be early 2027 before they get back to the success of the past. Disney+ has lost them insane amounts of money. Avatar 3 will do well in spite of Disney because James Cameron keeps the story to his vision and tells the Disney execs to fuk off. While they were filming Avatar 2 he had the top 2 grossing films of all time under his belt, so they don't fuk with the bull.

330 million, currently, so who knows how much more with whatever they're going to do next year, so lus the marketing.

But don't worry, let's say it somehow makes 550-600 million dollars, Sillie will claim it's a success because of toys and streaming rights......

Btw, time is as important as money. If you invest something for a year, you expect a return based on the time. If you invest the same money over 3+ years, you expect more and compounded over time. My point? Shelving and reshooting train wrecks, like Snow White, isn't just costing more money, it's also costing more time.

I have no idea what returns movie studios shoot for with their investments, it's risky as fuk so you would expect a high return to make it worthwhile. Well, pushing a project out a year - that's just one more year of compounding returns *better* you need to do, if you want to hit your goal.

Btw, the cost of a single episode of She-Hulk cost more than the entire budget of Godzilla Minus One... by a hefty margin at that.

We're all here (mostly) agreeing about the dismal likely over 1B loss Disney got handed in 2023 for it's movies. Real quick... what were the budgets of their Disney+ shows?

Here's the number of subscribers they have:https://www.statista.com/statistics/...ubscribers-us/

Which, seems like in 2023 they averaged 150million world wide. Gross $$$, that honestly looks ****ing impressive if it's anything close to $10 an account. Which, I checked, it can not be - the overall revenue was 8.4Billion for the year.

This... this is not good. It looks like the #s are stabilizing for them, if not dropping off. If they peaked and the reports that it'slosingmoney (somehow, with 8.4 billion revenue still losing money??), then growth is their only option. Looks like they peaked at the end of 2022, though.

I have a better handle on their movies than this steaming market or how things work there. Is it that expensive to setup streaming that you lose money with that kind of massive revenue? What are the costs associated with this that are killing them, are there things that they'll grow out of and won't have to worry about as much moving forward? If not, they could be very ****ed.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

I would hope they're taking the extra year to redo the plot and reshoot after reactions to Rachel Zegler crapping on the original and revealing that Snow Woke will be a girl boss who don't need no man were the worst reactions to any upcoming film in the history of cinema. Hopefully they're redoing half of the film and her dumbass comments make them take it in a completely different direction. If they're keeping the movie the way Zegler described it, it will be the mother of all bombs. If they took notice and are changing gears it will save them hundreds of millions of dollars even if they have to spend many millions more to redo a lot of the movie.

Disney is continuing to learn the hard way. They'll eventually get the message.

"At the core of liberalism is the spoiled child - miserable, as all spoiled children are, unsatisfied,
demanding, ill-disciplined, despotic and useless. Liberalism is a philosophy of sniveling brats."

Corporate finance manager?

Da phuk boyo? I haven't been a "manager" in 25 years FFS. But today I did build this amazing BE projection model with projected cash flow. Next project is to modernize our AR reserve model so the accounting monkeys can close earlier and get me the information I need to tell me how many tradies to lay off.

Back to me education y'all on movie finance. As I noted pre-pandemic the studios pumped out giant budget stinkers year after year after year. Ever think maybe just maybe these moves don't actually cost quite as much as the studio put out? Damn just read, studies get roughly 60% of domestic BO and 20-40% of the foreign BO.

But yet year after year studios pump out $200+M budget pictures (according to them).

Wake up friends, the math don't work. And I ain't even good at math.
