Anyone have some good suggestions on guitars that have a nut width of 1.7 or greater? I've been wanting to move into a solidbody or semi hollow (currently play acoustic and a couple of hollow body) but have some pretty meaty hands and fingers. I've found a lot of the guitars I've liked have been a little too narrow for me. Thanks in advance

Relevant information: Play a hybrid fingerstyle/classical style/finger picking. Play mostly blues/jazz/bluegrass/rockabilly but tone is second to me for this next guitar

I started out playing drums during high school and continued with it after the military while learning guitar simultaneously.

Growing up when you did was certainly more exciting and rewarding than today. Many things are easier today but not better in my opinion. I always laugh when the narrative is pushed that this generation is smarter. Take away access to wikipedia and chatGPT and their IQ drops at least 50 points.

Crystal Planet? The last Satch song I learned was Time Machine. I was going to post some Vai to demonstrate the tone I've got going but then you got your ass banned and I tore up my pedalboard to make more changes which meant making new cables... and another week went up in smoke.

I was hearing some weird stuff on higher notes from the analog delay so I replaced it with another digital delay. I play with a lot less gain than Vai, think more Bonamassa or Bukovac than Vai, so I needed to squeeze in another boost pedal before my tube preamp and then I needed to add a parametric EQ to dump some highs after it to tame the high end which is the secret sauce to Steve's tone. It cuts through but it's not shrill.

Of course in the analog world when you move one pedal it can screw everything up especially if you're a nut like me who makes cables to a certain length. Some pedals have top mounted jacks and some side mounted and suddenly won't fit. You get the idea. Would be a lot easier to get a Fractal and call it a day.

With analog your ears can play tricks on you. You'll go to bed after jamming on what sounds like the greatest tone you've had and the next day it sounds like sh*t. So you start tweaking stuff and make it all a lot worse before it gets better. With digital you can just make a new preset and go back to the first one at any time.It's tough to play Vai without the ol' whammy bar. Mine is blocked and I wouldn't even know where the bar is even if I wanted to jerk it up. I'm having to do a lot of bendy stuff to fill in the spaces where he wanks that bar. I am inspired to learn more songs though. Seeing Satriale go down in flames attempting Eddie's quirky parts was a reminder to go back and revisit a lot of that stuff I grew up on.

Good advice. $3300 in local money too. If I was coming back after a long break now instead of 2016 I'd do it. I nearly did back then with an Axe-FX II XL. There was a bit of a wait and I said f-it I'll build a pedalboard. No reason I couldn't have both because I don't like selling stuff.This is peak Vai IMO. Mid 90s. Had the Bogner which he should still use today because he never sounded better.

Ha....yes, there were some exciting things going on back then in the late Pleistocene Epoch.
Somehow, I got through it and here I am, above the dirt again today.
Every day is s gift at my age....and even your age!

This generation is hard for me to understand or even tolerate in many cases.
To my dismay, the world doesn't revolve around me so I can't make any boast worthy social improvements.
Besides, who actually listens too old peoples opinions anyway....surely there's no wisdom for us old fossils to impart to anyone.

Old mate's playing there was also spot on. Even rocking Schmoe's JS2400 too. I will say hotter ceramic pickups (e.g. Dimarzio Evolutions) make the difference with Steve's lead tone. Joe's guitars are geared more toward a dynamic, bluesy tone. My pickups are vintage output so I had to raise them to get in the neighborhood of that.

Again that was a really amazing job. Kind of sad that it has 700 views and he'd get more hits uploading a video of farts. At least we saw it. Really impressive.

I'm conflicted. The problem is getting it from the same guitar. You can't. I mean if you make it more dynamic, alnico low wind pickups, lower gain, you can't do that compressed, liquid sounding 80s thing, and vice versa.

The smart approach would be to build a Tele, maybe even put a Strat neck in it, and use that as my blues guitar straight into a Fender amp, and keep my Frankenstein Ibanez as the 80s machine with a whole lot of wet/dry/wet digital chit going on. Depending on my mood all bases are covered.

Correct. It doesn't exist. '58 burst into that new Marshall JTM20 thing. Sounds incredible to me. Vai couldn't get that in a million years with his JEM. Horses for courses. I love it all.
