Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma thinks linear games are a thing of the past...
https://www.eurogamer.net/zelda-prod...es-of-the-past
"It's interesting when I hear people say [I miss traditional linear Zelda]," Aonuma revealed, "because I'm wondering 'why do you want to go back to a type of game where you're more limited or more restricted in the types of things or ways you can play? Games which have a strict order of events are "kind of games of the past," Aonuma said, whilst modern games "can accept a player's own decisions and give them the freedom to flexibly proceed". This is the design philosophy of the Zelda team at Nintendo, he stated, though he added "I do have to admit making games that way always carries with it additional development costs".

Over for me.
Nothing beats the traditional dungeons, slowly unlocking more and more of it as I find key, new item, or solve a puzzle.
Wish they could try and merge the open world concept with some traditional progression and dungeons

Games of the past my ass. I don't need original NES Super Mario Bros. linear, but don't plop me in a 75 square mile map and tell me to "explore". Fuk you. I enjoy somewhat linear games like TLOU, Uncharted, Tomb Raider, etc. as they tell a more coherent linear story like a movie with decent character development and plot twists. As opposed to a 4,000 page book with 47 different subplots and 300 different characters.

Hope this isn't all it's going to be for the future of the franchise. Huge open world Zelda filled with bloat once every 6-7 years with a random remake or remaster sprinkled in.
Link to the Past to Wind Waker was the GOAT period for Zelda. Just banger after banger.

Games like Lies of P are linear, but they don't feel THAT linear. God Of War Ragnarok feels too linear. Like you are literally blocked from some areas.

Clown. Not everyone has 60 hours to sink into a massive open world game. I finally beat HZD West and didnt play a single side mission. Just did what i had to to level up. Still took 65 hrs. The game world is absolutely massive and the game is amazing but i want something more casual. Gaming is for fun, not my life.

damn
reading the responses ITT makes me realise I'm not alone in my stance on open world games
these new Zelda's cater towards an autist audience imo that loves the sandbox where they can clown around with no real purpose or progression
and the fact that it sells makes the brah in OP conclude linear story games are done... weird conclusion tbh
I see a big revival on the horizon for compact linear storydriven games since more and more people are simply burned out on massive fetch quest 100+ hours open world games
I have gotten every single Zelda game on release since the late 90's (ded srs) but TotK will be the last unless they change the formula
for now the Zelda franchise is dead to me

I'm happy future Zelda games are catering to me now even though I also love the old 2D Zelda's. OOT was just always extremely overrated, good that the producer of Zelda is leaving that behind now

Breath of the Wild...wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle. Never been so bored with a Zelda game.
Ocarina, Majora, and Link to the Past all mog the fuark out of BootW in almost every category. I also prefer Wind Waker and Twilight Princess to Breath of the Wild. One of the most disappointing games I've ever played.

A link's awakening, ALTTP and BOTW are much better than all the N64 zelda's, windwaker is good but the boring ocean travel made it worse.

I enjoy open world games and exploring everywhere but not all games need to be 100+ hour trophy fetch quests. Unironically most of the PlayStation "walking simulator" games provide the best balance of having a story but letting you screw around as you please.
Too many nerds think videos games need to be some kind of expression of high art.

The problem I have with games like TOTK is that while player agency is limitless. There is no depth and complexity to the world building and combat. The openness comes at a cost of depth.
The perfect balance would be a game like Elden Ring where the overall high-level progression is linear but within each region you come across as you progress through the story you are free to do whatever you want. On top of that the level design, combat, and character customization of Elden Ring was on a whole different level compared to ToTKs simplicity.

These 100-hour games have way less appeal to more casual gamers who just want a quick, fun experience. Every game's tryna be the 4-course steak dinner like every ho's tryna be your wife. Sometimes you just want a game that's entertaining, a quick greasy burger, and a ho. Not everything needs to be so fuking "deep" or complex. That's not to mention the fact that, the majority of the time, these games are mostly just side quests and filler. Compare Spider-man 2 to Arkham Knight. The latter was only "longer" if you were a big enough cuck to collect 300 useless Riddler trophies...
