Is it douchey for people with doctorates to have people call them "doctor"?

Is it pretentious for people with doctorates to insist people calll them "doctor"?

My opinion ... no. So as long as it it's a legit doctorate, then yes they've earned the title of "doctor" and should be addressed as such.

It's ok in a professional setting. Anyone demands that in a social setting should get ridiculed, esp if their doctorate is in something silly like religion or kinesiology (gym teacher lulz).

Unless they are medical doctors I think it's kind of pretentious, although I can only imagine how tough it would be to get and admire that.

Is this because you think people who hold doctorates in non-medical fields are not "real" doctors?

I used to think the same thing. Until I actually looked up the history of the title of "doctor". Tldr, originally the title of "doctor" went to people who are highly educated in a specific field and were teachers of that field. We didn't actually call "medical personnel" doctors until relatively recently ... like the 16th or 17th century or something. Perhaps that coincided when medicine became less snake-oil and more actual science.

So people holding doctorates are actually the "original" doctors.

what i mean to say is in a professional setting i'd call a medical practitioner a doctor and in an academic setting i'd call a doctor/professor their title out of respect

but outside of those settings i'd drop the title

I usually assume they’re joking when they use it for me, even though I have 2 technically (science PhD and PharmD)

Prefer most people don’t use it unless they’re students, which prof is just fine

I would just call them Sir, Ma'm

Here's a better example. Say there is a security guard at Walmart. No gun, no handcuffs, no police powers, blue walmart polo. You call him sir but he wants you to call him Officer. Wut do?
