Why would anyone have paid cash for a car back when rates were 1.9%?

Hur dur let me pull 50k out of the market in 2020 to buy a car cash and lose out on 10k investment gains just to save a couple hundred in interest.

$1350/mo on a 2022 explorer, short amortization on 1.9% financing.

Last of the low interest deals before rates went bananas.

The next car I buy will be the new gen 9 Camry probably. But I want to get a house/condo first. I think 2026 I might trade in my '18 and pick up a '25 or '26, using cash for the difference.

Never had a car payment and the whole argument of “but why pay cash when I could keep the $50k invested” is BS most people don’t even have $1k to their name let alone $50k. Car payments are for broke people. Even at 0% it has a -10% return due to depreciation, 0% is a cope.

How would you not have cash to invest when you pay cash for a car and say car payments are for broke people?

Down payment and 36 months on the rest, shortest term they'd give with the 1.9 rate.

Keep in mind that's Canadian dollars, the ST Explorer stickered around $75k up here.

Paying off a car early is one of the bigger money-losing moves I've made, though it was good for mitigating risk at the time

I threw $14k at a car loan back in 2020 when the pandemic hit. If I did with that $14k exactly what I did with the rest of my money at the time in the stock market, it would be worth like $80k today rather than saving like 3%

I don't believe in the APR/APY strategy I think it's a trap.

In fact I have a cashiers check on my desk for $6K I'm about to give to the orthodontist to save $400 by paying in full up front vs taking a 25 month no interest payment plan.

I know the math. I'm doing it anyway, I hate debt.

Opportunity cost is also opportunity gain until it happens bro. I sold a bitcoin at $12K to pay off my car. While it's rough in hind sight, I don't hate the decision because debt eats your soul.

Yeah I don't regret the move per se and wasn't 100% sure about income at the time with COVID so it made sense, but I'm not eager to throw extra money at other debt anytime soon

Paying cash at 0% has a fixed -10% return because it depreciates whether you pay cash or not. Mine started at -5%, since the money is sitting in an account at 5%, and as I slowly pay it off it ramps up to -10% on the payoff date.

Likewise.

We bit the bullet for a new Toyota Tacoma TRD (6 speed/6 cylinder @ 27K out the door) back in 2005 with all the extras of bed liner, alarm, dash/seat coversand kept up impeccable maintenance.
"Impeccable" maintenance on our vehicles is an imperative to get the most out of the 5-6 years of maybe 300+ monthly payments.
Only 98K miles and I'm glad we used that logic back then.

Holy shvt....I have no clue at what monumental price point of the Tundra (V8) is these days.

I agree, a $50k car is dumb af loan or not. Every broke person I know wouldn’t be broke if they didn’t have an auto loan(s). There are derps driving $50k cars and $100k trucks making 30k and 60k respectively
