carmax is fine. they aren't going to be super low priced but they typically are not dealer/rip-off level either.

they have a 30 day return policy and 90 day used car warranty usually I think. so you can drive the car for a while and bring it back to them to fix crap before the 30 days is up or tell them you are going to turn it back in.

so its not as low as a private party sale but you are getting some value (30 day return) for the money.

At this point, this is like asking an adult which Pokemon damage counters are their favorite while acting like whatever they answer with is a really big deal.

Only know two people who did Carvana and they hated it. Struggle bus to get info some times and Carvana kept trying to cancel the purchase because of BS.

The last year or two, cars at CarMax have been almost as expensive or more expensive than buying brand new. Do your homework on price first.

I just looked it up, Carmax is literally selling 4 year old Nissan Versas with 20k - 40k miles on them for the same price as a brand new one from the dealership. Plus you can probably do some digging and find some incentives to buy new or at least haggle a bit and get $1k or so off the price form the dealer, vs. Carmax's autistic craigslist boomer "no low ballers, I know what I got" attitude.

Dang, never thought I'd be arguing in favor of car dealerships but here we are.

Just my opinion, but I’ve been on their lots and looked around and had to pull my jaw off of the ground at the sight of their prices

I bought a brand new Toyota for less than they would have charged for a 3 year old of the same model with 50k miles on it that was probably used as a rental. Not thanks Jeff. I did have to negotiate and email other dealer quotes negotiate, but it wasn’t that much work. Like an hour of time

Maybe that was just a bad carmax and not applicable to you, idk

real estate agents if you want to call that a business.....ded fukn srs

That ain't a complement to dealerships

His experience does match mine, carmax literally wanted as much for a used (probably formal rental) as you could just buy brand new from a dealer. I'm also assuming the carmax loan would be a higher rate assuming you are financing

Ex-Carmax employee here.

While they have a good atmosphere to buy cars, and good basic warranties, their prices are outrageous compared to what you could find at other dealers. IMO I'd only buy a car there if it was absolutely the perfect car (color, options etc.) or a German car so you can get their extended warranty which is absolutely a great deal. Even 7 years ago when I worked there, I wondered how they made money on those things.

what i don't like is that they don't include maintenance records. that's something very important IMO.

The only purpose of Carmax in 2024 is using them as a one stop shop to test drive various makes & models w/ no obligation, before making a decision and buying it somewhere else.

Eventually them have to but for now they're keeping shareholders happy enough.
