Yes, where do you buy a car that costs literally $0/mile to drive?
The cost of the car doesn’t make a difference to the tax man. It’s gross profit and mileage, nothing more nothing less.

Add the $201 to his bottom line he actually made $501. Then you subtract what he paid in gas. If it's a car that gets 30mpg for 600 miles he used 20 gallons of gas so $60.

501-60 = $441 in his pocket. Not great but not terrible for 6 hours of work.
Pretty sure gas is a write off and per diem.

If you don't use actual expense method gas is included in the 0.67/mile standard rate.

Uber is way way better than fast food and warehouse work though. I'm not knocking the hustle at all.

So you would agree that the driver is getting completely fuked in angus when you factor in the cost of putting miles on his personal car?

It seems like the general consensus among miscers is that cars are free.

Do you all just drive your moms car?

Sure bud. I'll admit I'd rather do just about anything than work fast food again, but warehouse work usually pays better, has benefits, and is low stress.

You've never worked in a warehouse then, at least not a real one. Work at Walmart/Amazon/Home depot and let us know how you feel then.

Uber you can work your own hours, that a lone beats out most entry low paid jobs.

The government doesn't give you money for write offs. They deduct it from your total income so that you don't pay taxes on the portion you deduct. The OPs calculation was correct the driver will just pay lower taxes on his $16.50 per hour than a normal $16.50 per hour worker makes.

No because let’s say he grosses 100k driving for the year and the total cost of the car is 20k.. now let’s say he gets 3 years out of the car doing that before he needs a new one. It’s not that bad tbh

The majority of Uber drivers are low credit score mouth breathers. They're too low IQ to realize that wear and tear on vehicle is a major expense for any 1099 or business owner -- but then again, this certain group is the type to bring $599 for a down payment and leave the car lot excited about a vehicle they'll prematurely run into the ground with excessive mileage all the while still paying 14% interest rate on a 6yr car loan.

If the car note is $300/mo and insurance another $100/mo its pretty negligible when you are making $400/day. Plus $30 every 4 months for an oil change.

If you worked every day for a month that's what? 12k/month? Say 10k miles so you can write off $8600 tax free. Only paying income tax on 3400. So you're spending 1400 on car expenses, including fuel, but writing off 2k in expenses.

Is it the best job in the world? No. Can you make a living at it just driving around listening to tunes and talking to sloots? Sure.

This might help OP's argument

....I, as well as my whole social circle....wont even take a regular Uber when we travel or are out of town....Uber XL or Black no matter how may people are riding even if it's just me.

Just imagine jumping into some plebs car to let them drive you somewhere, trusting them with your life in not only their low income vehicle, but with their low income mindset, thinking ability, decision making skills, the list goes on.....

It blows my mind how some people are ok with jumping into some 10 year old basic econobox at 2am to let some idiot drive you home.

By my count I've worked in 5 different warehouses which included maintenance, assembly, picking/packing, loading/unloading, and production lines. My daughter has worked at Home Depot for nearly 10 years. I have plenty of experience around warehouses, but thanks for your critical and informed deep dive into my life.

How many miles would an Uber driver need to cover to get close to that $100k gross? Only slightly possible in a high cost living area which in turn equals higher gas prices.

100 to 150 thousand miles depending on your area. This is big cities with surge pricing, not rural chit holes.

Anywhere else and you're literally writing off 100% of your income so at some point you're claiming a complete loss which as some of you know throws you into "hobbyist" territory for taxes and you'll get audited.

Most people too stupid to make Uber type stuff profitable in the long run and it's why majority of them are broke and have nothing to show for it or just do it for fun on the side (which are most definitely losing money)

574 miles a day assuming a 5 day work week. 478 miles a day if it’s a 6 day week. This is an approximation, individual mileage may vary.

150,000 x .70 per mile

Ironically that would be a 100,500 tax writoff

This person would be paying taxes on 4,500 and would only owe like $450 for the year.

Brah..... In real life, with how much a car costs, in order to make $100k in a year, he would need to be actively driving passengers around for over 120hr per week.

In your fantasy world where cars are free, yes he'd be doing 'ok', but as my example shows, his expense eats up two thirds of his revenue, leaving him with about 33% of whatever of what's left before taxes.

No one has been able to name the make & model of these free cars you keep using in your math

You think you'll drive ~500 miles per day shuttling people around in your car? 10 hours averaging 50 mph? You must never have to stop and pick up passengers, get gas, eat, or piss.

If all of this was true, why are Uber-cels constantly complaining about how little they are paid. This thread makes me think I should quit my CEO 10K/day to drive Uber.

Yeah obviously I'm correct lol.

The fact we have multiple miscers in agreement that I am dead wrong shows why Uber actually has people driving for them.

Edit: actually if Uber drivers are 1099's, they will need to pay double social security tax so they would effectively be paying more taxes than a regular W2 employee who makes $16.50/hr.

Also food and drink for the journey, car cleaning products or paying for valet, paying for or cleaning the car exterior because no one is going to take a ride in some chitty looking Prius. Screenwash, consumables like headlight and indicator bulbs, brake discs and pads...It all adds up

That's the point. You don't really pay taxes on it so it can work out better than a 9-5. Fuel and vehicle costs are more than covered along with a good portion of your tax bill. So you are only out of pocket for healthcare.

Compared to someone making 50 or 60k in a warehouse you'd be an idiot not to switch.

You do pay taxes.

The write offs you get would be mileage, lunch, and phone.

also need to account for the roughly $1623 in automobile expenses that it took to earn a REVENUE of $2,435.... Which would equate to about $812 of pre-tax income.
