Just seeing before I plunge myself into the world of investing. Starting off with 5k I'm about to put into the market.

Day trade? Lol no, you will lose guaranteed. Day trading is probably the hardest way to make money in the world. Buying stock in a decent company and holding for a long time is really the only way a normie can come out on top

Or you can just copy the trades politicians make.

Been stock picking since 2018. I have beaten the market since I started but all the gains came before 2022. Since mid-2021 I've been mostly in cash.

Actively trading $5k is a waste of time. The best investors in the world are lucky to see 20% annual return. How much time are you going to spend to make $1000/yr?

If you have under $1M you're far better off learning a new valuable skill or taking on some overtime shifts rather than day trading.

Even after you reach the $1M mark you're far better off chasing brokerage bonuses and finding tax efficiencies rather than "day trading". It's only worth it if you genuinely enjoy it.

This.

Also, you end up freeing up your day and saving yourself a lot of time.

Leave the day trading to super computer algorithms - they will always find the slightest value opportunities before you can.

You can but you fall under PDT rule and get like 3 trades a week so it's hard to grow your account at first

Good luck OP. I haven't traded but probably would if I had the capital

No, 3 trades over 4 days, anything more and they flag your account and you have to wait for cash to settle (two days after each trade). You basically won't be able to daytrade after that. You could be super careful and do like 2 trades a week and try to hold some overnight but building up a tiny account is difficult unless you full port something and get lucky.

Unless your married to Nancy pelosi, forget about it

Put 99+ percent of your investment money in VTI or other equivalent

If you must, you can gamble on some single stock picks, but only for fun, and it must be a tiny tiny fraction of your overall investment. Basically, a substitute instead of betting on lottery tickets

Yes, until you have zero money left, which will take about 3 hours. 100% srs.

Here are steps you should take before day trading:

1- paper trade for 2 years before using real money. Make sure you win 90% of your trades.

2- learn how to invest by watching carefully selected about 50 videos.

3- learn how to day trade by watching another 50 or so day trading tutorials.

4- learn how to read all technical indicators. Can you tell me what Ichimoku cloud is? What time frame would you use for that? Do you know how to read the cloud properly? You need to correctly answer a couple of hundred questions like that one before even dreaming about daytrading.

5- you need to be subscribed to an expensive AI trading bot, which will do a lot of homework for you, you will then use your own analysis to agree or disagree with your bot before placing or exiting a trade.

6- stand in front of the mirror, look into your own eyes and repeat several times: 99% of daytraders as well as investors lose money, 99% of hedge fund managers and big investment banks underperform S&P 500, I am trading against the machines, I am trading against people who have been doing this professionally for several decades,

7- remember, if you are buying something, it means someone is selling something, you should ask yourself why that person is selling.

8- you need to be subscribed to a news alert bot, if some company comes out with some new cancer drug, the news bot will catch the keyword and alert you, you may have about two or three seconds to buy the stock, you will then have to sit at your computer uninterrupted, you may not take a shiet or a shower, you may need to exit the trade very very very quickly, does this sound like something you want to do? You will have to have obviously a very good Internet connection as well for this.

Investing is a skill just like playing a musical instrument or playing chess professionally against grandmaster professionals, people go to school for that for many years, when someone says they will daytrade itโ€™s similar to saying I am going to design a spaceship to go to Mars or Iโ€™m going to play tennis against Roger Federer, what makes you think that you can do that? RobinHood and other investment platforms have done great harm to society by making investing into a game, itโ€™s not a game, youโ€™re going to lose real money.

PS
be very very careful listening to people in this thread, as well as watching anyone on YouTube, many times people will show you some trade which made them money, but they will not show you their losses.

I have since I was a kid and have full time and for a living for the past 20 years or so. I am also a public stock consultant for various companies.

My average years I make mid to high 6 figures and sometimes low 7s. Have had a couple losing years as well.

Buy and hold solid American companies. 90% of day traders fail and you won't be an exception.

You will have way better odds of place bets at the horse track.

Pick the horses that are about 13-1 or so to show. that means they come in 1st, 2nd or 3rd you will get paid about 4-1 odds.

Some races only have like 6 horses in them so those will give you the simplest returns.

This thread is about day trading doe.

Very different than making trades in the stock market in general.

I honestly just do S&P ETF and small plays on Artificial Intelligence ETFs, then let it sit.

lol at day trading, youre competing against computers who have first dibs on the trades, meaning theirs processes faster than yours.

you think the elites are going to let the plebs beat them at this? the game is rigged, literally. your trades are processed after theirs.

This.

Its already been dominated. Like some people build their servers 90 feet closer to the market datacenter, because that means the data transfer time is 0.00000069 picoseconds faster than their competitor HFTs are.
