Two-thirds of House Dems vote against bill passed to deport illegal immigrants with DUI convictions

Over two-thirds of House Democrats voted Thursday in opposition to a bipartisan measure that was passed and if enacted could result in immigrants living in the U.S. illegally being deported for a DUI conviction.

Under the Protect Our Communities from DUIs Act, "driving while intoxicated or impaired" would be grounds for "barring a non-U.S. national (alien under federal law) from admission into the United States" or deporting the individual.

The vote tally was 215 Republicans and 59 Democrats in favor of the bill and 150 Democrats, including House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, voting against it. The bill passed 274-150.

"The bar to admission shall apply to an individual who has been convicted of the offense or has admitted to having committed the acts which constitute the elements of the offense. As a ground for deport-ability, the individual must have been convicted of the offense," read the text of the bill.

That is the unfortunate reality of why 150 democrats voted against the bill.

This was part of a number of recent "immigration" bills that weren't going to accomplish anything other than provide campaign material. I.e. it's political theater and gamesmanship.

One of the other bills, HR 6679 was specifically to deny immigration for anyone who attacked Israel. It passed 422 to 2 of course. Because it feels good.
